Woman arrested after fatal crash in Dawes County

Troopers with the Nebraska State Patrol (NSP) have arrested a woman on multiple charges, including Motor Vehicle Homicide and Driving Under the Influence, following a fatal crash Saturday in Dawes County.

The crash occurred north of Chadron on Slim Butte Road, when the 2002 Ford Windstar van driven by Kimberly Eagle Bull lost control and rolled. Six people, including three adults and three children, were transported to the hospital. Two of the children were transported by life-flight to Denver. Six-year-old Christina Roubideaux passed away Sunday at Denver Children’s Hospital.

Kimberly Eagle Bull, 32, of Pine Ridge, South Dakota, was arrested Sunday by NSP for Driving Under the Influence, Open Container, False Reporting, Child Abuse/Neglect, Failure to Use a Child Restraint, Motor Vehicle Homicide, and other charges.

Investigation of the accident was handled by the Dawes County Sheriff’s Office. The criminal investigation is being handled by the Nebraska State Patrol. A final determination on charges will be made by the Dawes County Attorney.

Officials say woman died after car-garbage truck collision

KENNARD, Neb. (AP) — Authorities say an 81-year-old car driver has died after a collision with a garbage truck in eastern Nebraska.

The crash occurred around 12:45 p.m. Tuesday on U.S. Highway 75, about 2½ miles (4 kilometers) east of Kennard. The Washington County Sheriff’s Office says the woman driving north when her car crossed into oncoming traffic and hit the truck.

The office says the woman died after being taken to an Omaha hospital. Her name hasn’t been released. The Sheriff’s Office says she lived in Fort Calhoun.

The Sheriff’s Office also says the truck driver wasn’t injured. He’s been identified as 61-year-old Joseph Bauersachs, of Omaha.

Ricketts touts Nebraska beef, tourism on Japan trip

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Gov. Pete Ricketts is promoting Nebraska’s beef and tourism industries with business leaders in Japan.

Ricketts and his trade delegation pitched the state’s offerings Tuesday in a meeting with representatives of Japan’s tourism industry. The delegation provided Japanese tourism officials with sample itineraries with potential tourism stops.

Delegation members also met with Japan’s state minister of agriculture, forestry and fisheries to discuss Nebraska’s beef trade with Japan. Ricketts also discussed trade with board members of the American Chamber of Commerce Japan and executives of the Kewpie Corporation, which owns Henningsen Foods, a company that employs 185 people in Nebraska.

Ricketts later met with Japan’s state minister of foreign affairs.

The trade mission is Ricketts’ second trip to Japan during his term.

Jane H. Dodson

Jane H. Dodson, age 76, of North Platte, died September 10, 2017 at Great Plains Health.  She was born on June 24, 1941 in Providence, Rhode Island to John and Grace (Crehan) Hynes.

Jane was a professional mother and treasured her role as a stay-at-home mom. She provided care and joy for many nieces and nephews, and volunteered as both a Cub Scout and Campfire mom. She was an adopted grandma to many.

After her husband Tom passed, Jane went to school and to work. She earned her Associate’s Degree from Mid Plains Community College, and worked in the Lincoln County Veteran’s Service Office until her retirement.

Jane was an active member of St. Patrick’s Parish, where she was involved in the homebound ministry and was a proud member of the Catholic Daughters. She created the “Without A Spouse” group at St. Patrick’s, and took great care in offering friendship and companionship to all in need. Jane had many circles of friends, and she took immense pride in coordinating their social calendars. Her “Angel Group” and “Golden Girls” meant the world to her. She would not let a friend’s birthday, holiday, or a Husker football game pass without a grand celebration.

Jane’s grandchildren were the light of her life. She delighted in their time together, always making sure to plan a special craft or activity. She devoted countless hours to creating albums, scrapbooks, writing cards, and baking her legendary chocolate chip cookies.

Jane loved the North Platte Catholic Schools and Irish activities. She could be found in the same spot along the sideline at every home Irish football game, with her car parked in the “Super Fan” spot.

Survivors include her children, Brian (Suzy) Dodson of Cave Creek, AZ, Steve (Lucy) Dodson, of Scottsdale, AZ, Kevin (Wendy) Dodson of North Platte, and Janelle Dodson of Nashville, TN; a brother, Paul (Pauline) Hynes of Rhode Island;  sisters-in-law, Mary Beth Dodson, Marlene Dodson, Rachel Hynes, and Claire Hynes; brother-in-law, Don Dodson; and her loving grandchildren, Chase, Luke, Logan, Paige, Hope, and Kayla; and numerous other family members and many friends.

Jane was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Tom in 1996; and two brothers, Robert “Bob” and John Hynes.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the North Platte Catholic School Endowment, and online condolences can be made at www.adamsswanson.com.

Christian Wake Services will be 7:30 p.m. Sunday September 17, 2017 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church.  Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 a.m. Monday September 18, 2017 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church with the Rev. Josh Brown as celebrant. Burial will follow at Ft. McPherson National Cemetery. Visitation will be 12:00 to 6:00 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at Adams & Swanson Funeral Home, which is in charge of arrangements.

 

NPCC Knights volleyball splits matches at McCook triangular

McCook – The North Platte Community College Lady Knights team split a pair of games against Division One opponents McCook Community College and Laramie County Community College on Tuesday night.

In the first match, the Lady Knights defeated the Lady Indians of McCook Community College in four sets, 23-25, 26-24, 25-17, and 25-10.

“I’m really glad to get a win against McCook. I thought we started out sloppy but really turned around and cleaned things up.” Lady Knight Head Coach Alexa McCall said, “We talk a lot about our serving and passing and I think they were ok tonight but we still need to be more consistent from both of those areas.”

Luisa Hernandez had 15 kills and 20 defensive digs for the Lady Knights. Amanda Kroeger had 10 kills Neci Sundquist finished with nine kills, Taylin McNair and Carlie Wytulka each had 18 set assists in the match. Wytulka also had 17 service points with two service aces. Shaylee Johnson also had two service aces.

In the second match for the Lady Knights in the triangular, the Lady Knights were defeated by the Laramie County Community College Lady Golden Eagles in four sets, 17-26, 16-25, 25-19, and 19-25.

McCall said, “We played a good LCCC team and thought we battled pretty hard for the most part. I just wish we could have taken them to five.”

Hernandez had 10 kills for the Lady Knights. Kroeger finished with nine kills in the match. McNair had 22 set assists and Antonya Schaffert had 10 defensive digs.

The Lady Knights are 7-10 on the season and 1-0 in Nebraska Community College Athletic Conference.

The Lady Knights travel to Beatrice on Wednesday, September 13 to play the Southeast Community College Lady Storm in a Region IX Division II contest. Game time is at 6 pm.

Nebraska senator to introduce bill after data breach

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A Nebraska lawmaker says he plans to introduce legislation next year that would require credit agencies to provide free, lifetime credit monitoring when their data systems are breached.

State Sen. Adam Morfeld of Lincoln said Tuesday he will propose the measure in response to news that up to 143 million American consumers had their personal information exposed when credit monitoring service Equifax was breached.

The information exposed includes Social Security numbers, birth dates, addresses and in some cases driver’s license numbers. Equifax has promised free credit monitoring for up to one year for those affected.

Morfeld says the company’s response is insufficient.

Nebraska prison search finds weapons, alcohol, drugs

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Authorities say a recent sweep of a Nebraska prison uncovered alcohol, homemade weapons, a smartphone and a significant amount of illegal drugs.

A prisons spokeswoman said Tuesday that officials conducted a thorough search of the Nebraska State Penitentiary after finding drugs, a smartphone and three weapons in a cell.

The search uncovered homemade weapons and homemade alcohol. Authorities checked all shop areas as well as windows and door frames in housing units, because the drugs recovered had been hidden inside a window’s steel casing.

The search took place Aug. 29 to Sept. 1.

Corrections Department Director Scott Frakes says a new centralized intelligence teams is helping officials respond more proactively.

A Nebraska State Patrol spokesman said his agency is investigating the case but declined to provide further details.

Man pleads no contest in strippers-to-neighbor case

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — An Elkhorn man accused of sending prostitutes to strip on his neighbor’s front porch over a three-year period has pleaded no contest to pandering.

45-year-old Douglas Goldsberry entered the plea Tuesday in Douglas County court. He faces up to four years in prison when he is sentenced in November.

In exchange for the plea, prosecutors dropped a second charge of soliciting prostitution.

Authorities say Goldsberry hired prostitutes to bare their breasts and strip on his neighbor’s porch while he watched from his house across the street.

The family with two small children reported that women had shown up as many as 75 times since 2013, exposing themselves and sometimes kicking the door and yelling for payment.

Man charged in death of wife outside Nebraska police station

SOUTH SIOUX CITY, Neb. (AP) — A man whom police say fatally shot his wife outside a northeast Nebraska police station is being held on $1.25 million bail.

The Dakota County Attorney’s office says it filed documents Monday charging 41-year-old Bei Sheng Chen, of South Sioux City, with first-degree murder, domestic assault and use of a deadly weapon during the commission of a felony.

His first court appearance has been set for Sept. 19.

Police say Bei Sheng Chen shot 33-year-old Mei Huang on Sept. 6 in the parking lot of the South Sioux City police station. She died hours later at a Sioux City, Iowa, hospital.

His attorney, Todd Lancaster with the Nebraska Commission on Public Advocacy, declined to comment Tuesday.

Man dies in farming accident south of NP

A 57-year-old North Platte man is dead following a farming accident south of the city.

On September 12, deputies with the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office responded to the report of a farming accident on West Watts Road.

It had been reported that a male subject was pinned in the mechanical portion of a farm implement, according to the LCSO.

Deputies and North Platte Fire and Rescue arrived at the location and found 57-year-old Lloyd Behrens trapped in a potato collecting machine.

Behrens was pronounced dead at the scene.

Deputies say no foul play, drugs or alcohol are suspected in the accident.
