MPCC Rodeo Team begins new season in Wisconsin

The best is yet to come.

That’s how Garrett Nokes, MPCC Rodeo Team timed event coach, feels about the team’s performance at the Falcon Frontier Days Rodeo in River Falls, Wis. over the weekend.

It was the first competition of the 2017-18 season, and the results weren’t quite what everyone had hoped for.

“All in all, we’ve had worse rodeos, but I know the competitive nature of our team members, and I know they are not happy,” said Nokes. “We had a couple of bad draws and a couple instances where we thought our horses were ready, but they weren’t.”

The mental aspect of competing also played a part.

“Some of the mistakes by our upperclassmen were made because they were trying too hard,” said Nokes. “They wanted to go in there, make stuff happen and defend our title, when in reality, they needed to relax a little and have more fun. No doubt this weekend will be better.”

The results of the rodeo were as follows:

  • Steer wrestling – Tyler Murray, of McCook, second
  • Team roping – Reed Murray, of Belvue, Kan., and Lane Kennedy, of Orleans, third; Seth Pearson, of Oconto, and South Dakota State University’s Reis Bruley, fourth; Kaile Jacobson, of Hershey, and Trenton Solida, of Phillipsburg, Kan., fifth
  • Breakaway Roping – Maura Christen, of Elwood, fifth
  • Men’s Team – fifth
  • Women’s Team – fourth

“I look for big things from Tyler this year,” said Nokes. “He did an outstanding job and really showed his maturity in Wisconsin. Injuries plagued him in the past, but he has been 100 percent for just shy of a year now. That has made a huge difference in his aggression level and confidence.”

Seven MPCC team ropers made it to the short go at River Falls – four of whom were freshmen. MPCC was also represented in the short round in breakaway.

“We had some freshmen in the team roping who really stepped up,” said Nokes. “Reed Murray, Tyler’s cousin, is a freshman this year. He roped alongside Lane Kennedy, who rode saddle broncs for us at nationals last summer. Lane got his hand caught in the dally – otherwise they probably would have won either first or second.”

The team will have a chance to move up in the standings as it competes at its hometown rodeo, the MPCC Stampede, Friday and Saturday at the Wild West Arena in North Platte. Performances will start at 7 p.m. each night. Admission is payable at the gate. It’s $10 for adults and free for children 10 and younger.

Nebraska’s new education standards to include climate change

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — The Nebraska State Board of Education has approved new science standards that will see the state’s public schools teaching climate change for the first time.

The board voted 6-1 Friday to approve the standards. Board member Pat McPherson, of Omaha, voted against the standards after trying unsuccessfully to amend the proposal that would have encouraged teachers to take into consideration students’ views on evolution, religion and climate change.

Under the new standards, students will analyze geoscience data and the results from global climate models to make evidence-based forecasts of the current rate and scale of global or regional climate changes.

The standards, which are updated every seven years, list what students should know in science in kindergarten through high school.

Teen charged with 5 felonies after shooting at deputies

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — A teenager has been charged with five felonies — including attempted murder — after investigators say he fired on Douglas County Sheriff’s deputies with a 12-gauge shotgun, hitting one.

The 17-year-old was charged Friday with two counts of attempted murder, one count of second-degree assault and two weapons counts. The Associated Press generally does not name juveniles charged with crimes.

The teen remained hospitalized Saturday after being shot Sept. 3 by one of the deputies who returned fire after Deputy John McFarland was hit by shotgun pellets. McFarland was treated and released the same day.

Investigators say the deputies were called to the boy’s Waterloo home before dawn by his parents after the teen reportedly attacked them with a baseball bat when they confronted him about drinking alcohol.

Ex-Gering police sergeant accused of stealing from program

GERING, Neb. (AP) — A former Gering Police sergeant has been charged with three counts of theft, accused of stealing from a program that provides kids with gifts for their family members.

40-year-old Henry Moreno is accused of stealing more than $1,000 from the Shop for a Cop program. Scotts Bluff County Court documents show he’s been charged with three counts of theft by taking, a misdemeanor.

Moreno resigned from the Gering Police Department last month.

A phone number for Moreno could not be found, and his details of his case, including his attorney, did not appear in online court records.

Report: Unclear how much extra money helped Nebraska prisons

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A new report finds a $1.5 million effort to reduce staff turnover in Nebraska’s prisons produced mixed results, but corrections officials say the problem would have been worse if lawmakers hadn’t approved the money last year.

The report by the Department of Correctional Services shows a combination of successes and failures in the state’s attempts to keep more experienced workers. Corrections officials submitted the report to lawmakers to document how they spent the funding increase from the 2016 legislative session.

Nebraska’s prison system has faced scrutiny following a series of high-profile incidents, including two deadly inmate uprisings in a two-year period and the escape of two inmates. Critics say many of the problems stem from overcrowding and staffing shortages driven by high employee turnover.

New director wants to expand Latino Center’s influence

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — The new director of the Latino Center of the Midlands is shaking things up.

Albert Varas, who became director in January, is launching new programs and shifting resources to build on the center’s history in Omaha and Douglas County and see its influence grow.

“We’re finding new ways we can add value for the people we serve,” Varas said.

The center is helping health care providers restructure health services, identify barriers to care and find remedies. It’s also focusing on new mental and behavioral health efforts, with the help of community partners.

In addition, the center is working with companies in neighboring Sarpy County and the Sarpy County Chamber of Commerce to hire and transport workers.
