Michael Foods produces, markets and distributes specialty eggs, refrigerated potatoes and some dairy products.

Grand jury clears officials in death of Nebraska jail inmate

WAHOO, Neb. (AP) — A grand jury has found no wrongdoing by officials in the death this summer of an inmate at the Saunders County Jail.

In a news release Wednesday, Saunders Count Attorney Steven Twohig says the grand jury came to the decision in the case of 45-year-old Robert Imus, who died July 29 at a hospital after being found unresponsive in his cell.

Imus had been arrested in Dodge County on drug charges and later taken to the Saunders County Jail. Officials say Imus’ death was determined to have been caused by a methamphetamine overdose.

Nebraska law requires a grand jury investigation whenever someone dies in custody.

Nebraska county reserves beds in Kansas county jail

BEATRICE, Neb. (AP) — Gage County has reserved beds at a jail across the state line in northern Kansas and at a jail in south-central Nebraska.

The Gage County Board of Supervisors approved a contract Wednesday for 10 beds in the Washington County, Kansas, jail and five at the jail in Nebraska’s Dawson County. Both one-year contracts call for a rate of $45 a bed per day, regardless of whether they’re used by inmates from Gage County.

Contracting with other jails intensified this summer as the number of inmates reached double the Gage County jail’s capacity of around 27. The overflow inmates were housed at up to seven different counties at one time, causing transportation problems for jail workers.

10 teachers seek no-confidence vote on university president

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Ten faculty members have called for a no-confidence vote in the leadership of the Doane University president.

A letter submitted to the faculty council Tuesday asks Doane’s teachers for a formal vote stating they do not support President Jacques Carter. He’s in his seventh year leading the liberal arts college in Crete.

The eight-page letter says Carter has failed to follow through on strategic initiatives to raise enrollment, expand the university presence in Omaha and complete fundraising campaigns. It also says Carter has mismanaged personnel, citing “incredible turnover in key academic leadership positions.”

Carter didn’t immediately return a call Thursday from The Associated Press. University spokesman Mike Lefler says Carter’s out of the country and unavailable. Lefler declined to comment for him.

Nebraska soldiers playing ‘the enemy’ in Swedish exercise

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Some Nebraska National Guardsmen have been playing “the enemy” during war games in Sweden.

The 60 or so members of Yutan-based E Company, 134th Infantry Regiment are among the more than 1,300 U.S. troops taking part in Aurora 2017, which Swedish military officials say is their largest military exercise in more than 20 years. The more than 20,000 military members involved also include troops from Denmark, Finland, France and other countries.

Capt. Joshua Metcalf is a former commander of E Company, and he says the Nebraskans won’t be claiming any victories on the simulated battlefields. He said most of the exercises are designed so “the good guys win and the bad guys lose.”

The men of E Company are expected back in Lincoln by Saturday.
