OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — An Omaha man has been accused of running a cockfighting operation.

Nebraska man accused of helping suspect flee to Kansas

FALLS CITY, Neb. (AP) — A 33-year-old Falls City resident has been accused of helping a friend flee to Kansas after the friend killed another man more than two years ago.

Michael Seager is charged with being an accessory to a felony. Court records say Seager drove Desiderio Hernandez to Horton, Kansas, after Hernandez fatally shot Joseph Debella Jr. on Aug. 5, 2015. Hernandez has since been sentenced to life in prison for first-degree murder.

Richardson County records say Seager remained in custody Monday. Court records don’t list the name of an attorney who could comment for Seager.

The records say Hernandez went to Seager’s home after the shooting and told Seager that some “bad stuff happened” and that he needed to leave town. Seager later drove Hernandez to a relative’s home in Horton.

Authorities investigate death of man at Burning Man festival

Authorities are investigating the death of a man who died of his injuries a few hours after he rushed past layers of security officers into a massive fire at the Burning Man festival’s signature ceremony.

Late Saturday night, Aaron Joel Mitchell, 41, broke through a two-layer security perimeter during the Man Burn event in which a giant, wooden effigy is set ablaze.

Nevada’s Pershing County Sheriff Jerry Allen estimated that there was a crowd of about 50,000 people who were present when the festival’s crew of firefighters pulled Mitchell out of the blaze.

He was airlifted to the UC Davis hospital burn center in California, where he died Sunday morning. The sheriff said doctors confirmed Mitchell wasn’t under the influence of alcohol, but a toxicology report is pending.

Nebraska mom accused of striking her 4 kids and choking 1

ALBION, Neb. (AP) — A trial has been scheduled later this month for an eastern Nebraska woman accused of striking her four children and choking one of them.

Court records say 28-year-old Casey Dodds, of Cedar Rapids, has pleaded not guilty to child abuse and strangulation. Her trial is set to begin Sept. 20 in Albion.

Her eldest child told authorities his mom struck him several times and the three other kids at least once in their faces on April 24 after she tried to take them to school in the middle of the night. The 10-year-old boy reported that his mom choked him for a time and struck him after he refused her order to tell people at school that one of his siblings had hit him.

Ailing airline ending flights to 2 Kansas, 3 Nebraska cities

SCOTTBLUFF, Neb. (AP) — An airline providing government-subsidized service to three Nebraska and two Kansas cities plans to end the flights later this month.

PenAir notified the U.S. Transportation Department last week that service to Kearney, North Platte and Scottsbluff in Nebraska and to Dodge City and Liberal in Kansas will cease after Sunday. The information was first reported by an airline industry news site, ch-aviation.com.

The Anchorage, Alaska-based carrier announced last month that it was filing a Chapter 11 bankruptcy reorganization plan and planning to close its Denver hub.

The company says it had intended to continue service until replacement carriers were chosen and in place, but it says a massive exodus of its pilots forced it to end the two states’ service far sooner.

New recall effort against Bellevue city councilman OK’d

BELLEVUE, Neb. (AP) — A recall effort against a Bellevue city councilman will proceed after a judge found language in a refiled recall affidavit acceptable.

A new order from a Sarpy County District Court judge gives Councilman Pat Shannon 20 days from Aug. 28 to submit a defense statement to be included on recall petitions or appeal the judge’s decision to a higher court.

Last month, the judge halted the first recall effort because the affidavit was handwritten, not typed as required by state law.

The recall effort comes after Shannon was found not guilty of violating electrical license requirements for a building he owns. Also this summer, the City Council voted to condemn and tear down an eyesore carwash owned by Shannon.

Ronald McDonald House seeks $10M expansion of Omaha facility

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Officials with the Ronald McDonald House in Omaha are trying to raise more than $10 million to expand the facility.

The organization announced the Hope and Healing Expansion project Wednesday.

The project would add 20,000 square feet and 20 guest rooms to the facility, which houses families of children receiving medical treatment in the city.

The facility now has 20 rooms. Families were turned away nearly 800 times last year.

Plans also include adding an in-house clinic and infusion center that will be operated by Nebraska Medicine.

The additional space will allow the facility to offer programming, including classes for children who are missing school because of their hospital stays.

Officials hope to expand the facility by 2019. About $8.7 million has been raised so far.
