8 hunters facing penalties for deer hunting violations

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska authorities say eight hunters from Louisiana have been cited for several deer hunting violations.

The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission said in a news release Wednesday that the eight were cited earlier this month for illegal activities in southeast Nebraska’s Gage and Jefferson counties. The violations included hunting without permits, killing too many deer and borrowing deer hunting permits.

The commission says the carcasses of 12 illegally taken deer were seized and says penalties will exceed $13,000.

Patrol says Mitchell woman died 2 days after crash

MITCHELL, Neb. (AP) — Authorities say a woman injured in a western Nebraska crash has died at an Omaha hospital.

Nebraska state trooper Manuel Jimenez reported Wednesday that 41-year-old Cherie Knaub had died. She’d been injured early Monday morning when her vehicle ran into the back of a truck stopped at railroad tracks along U.S. Highway 26 just west of Mitchell.

She was flown to a Scottsbluff hospital before being taken to Omaha.

Authorities say the truck driver wasn’t hurt.

Trooper says driver who struck man was distracted by text

HOLDREGE, Neb. (AP) — Authorities say a driver who was reading a text message when her car fatally struck a pedestrian has been charged with vehicular homicide in south-central Nebraska.

24-year-old Cattarina Stock, of Belmont, also is charged with reckless driving, violating a law governing wireless communication devices and failure to yield to a pedestrian. A public phone listing for Stock couldn’t be found. Her attorney didn’t immediately return a call Thursday from The Associated Press.

Authorities say 86-year-old Holdrege resident Aldon Thieszen was crossing a Holdrege street June 28 when he was stuck by Stock’s car. A Nebraska trooper says in an arrest warrant affidavit that Stock failed to keep an eye out for pedestrians and was distracted by one of a series of texts she’d been exchanging.

Woman says she can’t get back her car: It’s evidence

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A Lincoln woman has been trying to get back her car from Lancaster County prosecutors, who say they can’t let it go.

Dorris Harris said her car was involved in a hit-and-run that cost a man his leg. She had nothing to do with the crime and has cooperated with prosecutors.

County Attorney Joe Kelly says the evidence has to stay in police custody until defense attorneys say otherwise. He says it’s unfortunate when an innocent person is caught in the middle of the judicial process, but one of the suspects involved is still being sought. Kelly says that’s delayed the release of Harris’ car.

The vehicle still sits in an impound lot, running up a $12-a-day storage fee, which will be paid by taxpayers.

(Updated) Man killed in car vs. train crash near Brady

UPDATE November 23, 2017

Lincoln County Sheriff’s Deputies completed a preliminary investigation which showed a Union Pacific Railroad Train was traveling eastbound around sixty miles per hour. As it approached a private crossing near mile marker 202 on Highway 30 a van drove onto the crossing northbound toward U.S. Highway 30. The train crew advised the vehicle stopped on the tracks blocking the crossing and they could not avoid striking the vehicle.

The male driver of the vehicle was identified as a sixty one year old Nance County resident David Borgheiinck. Alcohol or drugs do not appear to be a factor. No other injuries were reported in the incident. The investigation continues.

Delores Louise Larson

Delores Louise Larson, 92, of Holdrege, formerly of Loomis, passed away Nov. 20, 2017, at Holdrege Memorial Homes.

Delores was born on May 14, 1925, on the family farm northeast of Bertrand in Phelps County, the only child of Carl and Ethel (Lundberg) Hultman. She grew up on the family farm and graduated from Bertrand High School with the class of 1943. That same year, she began working at the First State Bank in Loomis. During her early years at the bank, she lived in several apartments in Loomis. On weekends, however, she took the train back to Bertrand to stay with her parents. Delores remained at the bank for 35 years before retiring in 1978.

On March 5, 1949, she was united in marriage to Elliott Larson, and to this union three children were born, Paula, Mark and Craig. The couple made their home in Loomis. In the 1960s and ’70s, she was very active with the March of Dimes fundraising campaigns, as well as membership drives for the Holdrege Community Concert. On Saturday nights, you’d often find Delores and Elliott at the Elks Club. Throughout the years, she was also active with the BPO Does.

Delores was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Bertrand and enjoyed hosting and attending Circle. After retiring from the bank, Delores enjoyed spending time with family and friends, and she loved to travel.

She earned the nickname “Grandma Dee,” as she loved not only entertaining her own grandchildren but was also a surrogate grandmother to others. She was a faithful visitor to hospitals and nursing homes, and loved sending cards and gifts for any and all occasions.

Following the passing of her husband Elliott in 1986, she kept busy traveling. Delores enjoyed the drive to Iowa each fall to visit her cousins and loved taking bus trips to Branson, Omaha and Kansas City to see shows. A highlight of her life was in 1992, when she made her second trip to Sweden to visit relatives.

In 2001, Delores suffered a stroke and began to make her home at Holdrege Memorial Homes. For many years, she remained very active and enjoyed taking day trips to have lunch with friends.

Besides her husband Elliott and her parents, she was preceded in death by six brothers-in-law, Clifton (Gladys) Larson, Ralph Larson, Raymond Larson, Roland (Mary) Larson, Elton (Mavis) Larson and Warren (Lois) Larson.

Delores leaves to celebrate her life her three children Paula (Ward) Peterson of Kearney, Mark (Lynn) Larson of North Platte and Craig Larson of Scottsbluff; four grandchildren, Brooke (Matt) Larson of Lincoln, Alison (Seth) Svoboda of Peoria, Arizona, Lucas (Haley) Larson of Waverly and Alyssa (fiancé Justin Graham) Larson of Omaha; seven great-grandchildren, Soren and Vic Svoboda, Collins and Rowan Larson, Paetyn and Owen Larson, and Ayla Graham; and a host of cousins, which includes several first and second cousins in Sweden.
