Nebraska judge tosses out evidence against Iowa defendants

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A judge has tossed out drugs found in a vehicle as evidence in a pending trial because the Lincoln police officer who pulled over the vehicle on Interstate 80 didn’t have probable cause for the traffic stop.

Court records say 42-year-old Andrea Plummer and 35-year-old Phillip Plummer, both of Sioux City, Iowa, are charged with possession for sale and related crimes.

Phillip Plummer was driving on Sept. 16, 2016, when his vehicle was stopped for what the officer said was following too closely. A subsequent vehicle search turned up more than 3 pounds (1.4 kilograms) of marijuana, 2 ounces (27 grams) of cocaine and nearly $16,000 in cash.

The judge agreed with the defense that the officer’s car video showed the Plummers’ SUV had been boxed in by traffic.

Simple steps can help people stay healthy at the holidays

Douglas County Health Director Dr. Adi Pour says some simple practices such as washing hands often can help limit the spread of germs.

Pour says it’s a good idea to make sure you don’t commit to too many things during the holidays.

And anyone who plans to drink alcohol should make arrangements for another driver.

Pour says it’s also good to get enough sleep and avoid over eating.

Nebraska senators hope to revive stalled bills in 2018

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Expect some new debates on old measures when Nebraska lawmakers return to the Capitol next month for the 2018 session.

Senators have spent the last few months tinkering with proposals that stalled last year in hopes of reviving them during the 60-day session that begins Jan. 3.

Some of the bills likely to return for debate involve occupational licensing, online sales tax collections, voter ID proposals and a push to have Nebraska call for a constitutional convention.

Lawmakers can carry over bills from this year into the upcoming session, but only measures formally designated a “priority” have a realistic chance of getting debated.

Speaker of the Legislature Jim Scheer says he expects some debate on familiar issues but will work to ensure senators aren’t wasting time.

Prosecutors say 55-year-old Lenn Zuhlke has pleaded guilty. His sentencing date is March 19.

The robbery occurred April 20 in the Cuming County community of Bancroft. Prosecutors say he’d driven Jeffrey Bonneau to pick up a stolen all-terrain vehicle and was supposed to rendezvous with Bonneau after the heist.

Prosecutors say Bonneau got away with more than $6,700 from the First Bank of Bancroft but crashed the ATV a short time later.

Bonneau also has pleaded guilty. His sentencing is set for Feb. 26.
