1 fired, 2 step down from Nebraska Patrol after probe

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A Nebraska State Patrol trooper has been fired and two officers have stepped down following a probe into allegations that the agency mishandled internal investigations.

Patrol Superintendent John Bolduc announced Wednesday that one lieutenant colonel retired, one sergeant resigned and one trooper was fired. Additionally, two officers were demoted and two others received unspecified punishments. Bolduc refused to identify any of the affected employees, citing confidentiality rules.

The investigation was launched amid allegations that patrol officials failed to adequately report and handle alleged misconduct cases.

One incident involved a man who was killed when a trooper bumped his vehicle during a high-speed chase. The other involved a trooper who struck an intoxicated man in the head with a rifle butt after the man ignored orders to get on the ground.

Dorothy Elizabeth Faulkner

Dorothy Elizabeth Faulkner of North Platte, Nebraska; born February 20, 1920, died December 15, 2017.  She could do laundry, set the table, and fix dinner for a family of 9 while carrying an infant child on her hip.  She made it seem effortless even when it clearly wasn’t. That exemplified her way of giving the gift of love, always giving of herself and never complaining.  After gracing our lives for almost 98 years, she has been called home to the Lord.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband Claude Faulkner in 1988, after 49 years of marriage. She is survived by her 7 children; Claude (Mary), Philip (Patricia), Thomas, Daniel (Beverly), Lynne, Steven (Joetta), and Douglas (Ellen); 17 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

She had two sisters and three brothers, all deceased; many aunts and uncles; many nephews and nieces; and more than 100 first cousins.  Her memory of her relatives was always incredibly sharp. She never lost her ability to recall names, marriages, births, birthdays, and important events.

She was born and grew up on a small farm southwest of Hastings, Nebraska in an area settled by German immigrants. She attended High School in Roseland where she was Class Valedictorian. Following graduation, she moved to North Platte. She worked at the F. W. Woolworth “Five & Dime” department store at the soda fountain.  She quickly met and made new friends, including her then-to-be husband.  She was a wonderful wife and mother, caring for her husband and 7 kids. She loved to play cards, especially bridge at which she was quite good.  She enjoyed playing board games with her children and grandchildren. She was adventuresome; she could be found going on bicycle rides, camping trips, hiking in the mountains and even cross-country skiing. She made trips to Europe including visiting Rome and Rieti, Italy, many European countries, especially the United Kingdom and Ireland. She also traveled the USA attending graduations and marriages until her health did not permit it.

She was active in Holy Spirit Church and St. Patrick Church and School affairs including Catholic Daughters, Altar and Rosary Society. She was very involved at Holy Spirit Church barbecue, and in preparing meals for funerals and other functions. She was also a very devout Catholic. She had a great love for the Blessed Mother and the rosary, saying it daily until she died.

Dorothy was a wonderful woman, wife, mother and a great friend and relative to many. She was dearly loved and will be terribly missed. We find solace knowing she is in heaven.

University of Nebraska-Lincoln to demolish 2 dorms

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — The University of Nebraska-Lincoln has released details of its plan to demolish a matching pair of high-rise dormitories that have housed thousands of students since 1963.

The 13-story Cather and Pound dormitories will be imploded on Friday.

Preparations for the demolition began in May when the university began removing windows, heavy furniture and mechanical parts from the dorms.

Controlled Demolition Inc. has spent several weeks preparing the buildings. The company is placing dynamite into support columns on select floors of the dorms. Barriers have also been put in place to minimize material being thrown outward and to prevent damage to nearby structures.

The last remnants of the dorms are expected to be taken to a landfill early next year.

Nebraska panel denies request to amend Keystone XL ruling

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A Nebraska commission that approved a route for the Keystone XL pipeline through the state is declining requests to amend its decision.

The Nebraska Public Service Commission on Tuesday denied motions by pipeline developer TransCanada and leading opponents of the project. The decision to approve a route through the state is expected to be appealed in court.

Opponents have said the commission overstepped its jurisdiction and denied due process to affected landowners when it approved a different route than what TransCanada had preferred. They say the alternative pathway will affect landowners who weren’t along the company’s preferred route and didn’t have a chance to speak against it.

TransCanada had asked the commission to let it file an amended application to thwart an appeal on those grounds.

Omaha police getting body cameras with new technology

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Omaha police officers will soon be equipped with body cameras that will automatically be activated in certain situations.

The City Council on Tuesday will approve the purchase of 460 cameras, ensuring most officers have the technology.

The cameras have new features enabling them to automatically activate when an officers readies a stun gun, turns on a cruiser’s emergency lights or dashboard-mounted camera as well as when other nearby cameras are activated. The department will test a new feature that activates a camera when an officer draws a gun.

The Omaha Police Foundation will reimburse $1.4 million of the city’s cost for the cameras.

Besides paying for new cameras, the funding will pay for the automatic activation of 115 body cameras now in use.
