White supremacist faces terror charge after train stopped

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A white supremacist accused of stopping an Amtrak train in Nebraska has been charged with terrorism.

Documents unsealed Wednesday in U.S. District Court in Lincoln show 26-year-old Taylor Wilson, of St. Charles, Missouri, is charged with terrorism attacks and other violence against railroad carriers and mass transportation systems.

The eastbound train with about 175 people aboard halted early Oct. 22 in Oxford, Nebraska, about 200 miles (320 kilometers) southwest of Omaha. Court documents say a Furnas County deputy sent to the scene found Amtrak employees holding Wilson. The deputy says Wilson had a loaded revolver, plus more ammunition and a knife.

The court documents show the FBI has evidence of Wilson’s activities with white supremacist groups.

The Associated Press left a message for his attorney in a related case Friday.

Omaha man sentenced for shooting death of Iowa man

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — An Omaha teen has been sentenced to up to 12 years in prison for his role in the gun-play death of another man last year.

Omaha television station WOWT reports that 18-year-old Montana Garbez was sentenced Friday to six to 12 years for manslaughter for the April death of 20-year-old Scott Evans, of Council Bluffs, Iowa.

Garbez pleaded guilty to the charge in September. In exchange, a felony weapons count was dropped.

Police found Evans dead inside a home in north Omaha home after being called to the house for a report of a shooting.

Prosecutors say Garbez and another man appeared to have been using a gun in a game similar to Russian roulette, and Evans was shot in the head. Prosecutors say Garbez fired the deadly shot.

Shirley Ann Keck

Shirley Ann Keck, age 90 of North Platte, went home to be with our Lord on Wednesday January 3, 2018 at Great Plains Health with her family by her side. She joined the love of her life William C. Keck “Bill Sr.” on his birthday, as well as their son Eddie.

Shirley was born on February 1, 1927 in Manning, IA to Herbert L. and Francis (Lukegord) Blair. She moved with her family to Grand Island in 1943. She attended various schools in Iowa and Nebraska. She met William C. Keck Sr. in Grand Island and they were married on Valentine’s Day 1944 at St. Mary’s Cathedral. They were married for 54 years, until Bill Sr. passed away in 1998. To their union 10 children were born, Bill “Butch” Jr., Bonnie, Allan, Steve, Kathy, Kenny and Keven, Dorothy, Ed, and Dick. She was the light of her family’s life, she was always there for her children, cooking, cleaning, hugging, and made raising 10 children look like it was the simplest thing in the world! All she needed was a 10 minute nap and she was back running circles around her kids and eventually her grandkids! In addition to her own children, she was dearly loved and known as “Mom” to many of her children’s’ friends. Shirley had endless energy, not only caring for her family, but also working full time as a waitress at The Liederkranz Private Club in Grand Island and part time at the Motel 6 at the front desk where she enjoyed meeting many people. Together she and Bill Sr. owned Neimono’s Costume Shop in their home, renting costumes all over the country and making memories with their Halloween decorations and pumpkins. She was a member of the Eagle’s Women’s Auxiliary Club, American Veteran’s Club and St. Patrick’s Catholic Church and Rosary Group. She prayed the Rosary daily. She and her good friend, the late Phyllis Wilkens, volunteered at elementary schools sharing knowledge on the history of the American Flag. She also volunteered at the Bargain Bin where she enjoyed the relationships she developed there. She was available to attend and be involved in her children’s and grandchildren’s activities and sports. She was a true friend to all, thinking of others above herself. They say “Angels walk among us” and anyone who knew Shirley knew that to be true. She leaves behind the Keck Legacy of 10 children, 92 grand and great and great great grandchildren, plus 3 on the way.

Shirley is survived by 9 children, Butch “Bill” Jr. of Omaha, NE, Bonnie Jo Tilford of North Platte, Allan of Grand Island, Steve (Cindy) of North Platte, Kathy Buck of North Platte, Kenny (Teresa) of North Platte, Keven (Alice) of North Platte, Dorothy (Hubert Sorrells) Savory of North Platte, and Dick (Kristi) of Kearney; a large combination of 92 grandchildren including great and great-great grandchildren, with 3 on the way; brothers Bonard Blair of Grand Island and Bob Blair of Lincoln; sisters-in-law Joy Robertson of Grand Island and Patty Knutson of Omaha; as well as many other extended family members and friends; and her beloved dog Sweetie.

Bill would cap local elected officials’ salaries in Nebraska

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A Nebraska lawmaker is proposing a cap on the salaries of local elected officials after a county board’s members gave themselves several pay raises.

Sen. Justin Wayne of Omaha introduced a bill Thursday that would prevent city councils, county boards and other local governments from paying their members more than twice the annual salary of a state senator. Senators currently make $12,000 a year.

The measure follows the Douglas County Board’s vote last month to give its members a 4 percent annual pay raise over four years. Board members’ annual salaries will increase to $51,879 in 2019, followed by a 4 percent increase each year until the salaries reach $58,356 in 2022.

County board members previously gave themselves raises for 2017 and 2018 that amounted to a 34 percent increase.

Omaha educator remains jailed on $500K bail in sex case

Matthew Fedde

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Prosecutors say a 45-year-old suburban Omaha assistant high school principal had sex with a 15-year-old student on school grounds.

The details were made public Tuesday when a judge upheld Matthew Fedde’s $500,000 bail. Fedde remained jailed Wednesday.

Investigators say Fedde had multiple sexual encounters with the student on school grounds starting in September. Fedde was arrested last week after the girl’s parents found references to a sexual relationship with Fedde in her diary. An arrest affidavit says investigators also found text messages between the girl and Fedde.

Fedde’s lawyer, Matthew Bond, says Fedde is innocent and will fight the two felony counts of sexual assault of a child.

Fedde is on administrative leave from the Millard School District.
