Lincoln tests all-electric, driverless shuttle technology

Courtesy navya.tech

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Lincoln officials are inviting residents to help test out an all-electric, driverless shuttle bus for a pilot program that could bring more autonomous vehicle services to the city.

The public will have a chance to reserve a 15-minute ride on the bus starting Thursday. The shuttle will be conducting trial runs at the Nebraska Innovation Campus in

Lincoln until mid-July. The city will collect feedback on riders’ experience.

Lincoln was loaned the self-driving shuttle with a $100,000 grant from Bloomberg Philanthropies. The city is participating in a challenge with the charity organization and could potentially acquire up to six shuttles for a 2019 pilot program.

Mayor Chris Beutler says the innovative technology can positively impact transportation by reducing costs, lessening traffic congestion and improving air quality.

Garry Ray Dodge

Garry Ray Dodge, 76, of North Platte, NE passed away Saturday, June 23, 2018 at his home from complications of Pulmonary Fibrosis.  He was born February 19, 1942 at Callaway, NE to Ernest and Rose (Sladky) Dodge.  He grew up and attended school in Callaway, NE.  Garry married the love of his life, Karen Leibhart on January 21, 1961.  To this union three children were born, Debra, Susan, and Garry Jr.

Garry worked many years around Callaway.  He began his career on the Union Pacific Railroad in May of 1969 as an engineer and was also Road Foreman of Engineers for nine years.  Garry retired in 1995 with medical issues.  He still enjoyed telling railroad stories and missed all of his co-workers.

In his retirement he was able to enjoy family and especially his grandkids whom he loved dearly.  He loved telling them stories, he was quite the story teller and the grandkids were a good audience whether the stories were true or not.  For anyone that knew Garry or even crossed paths with him, he always had a corny joke to make you smile.

What a talented man he was.  Garry could fix anything, build anything, he was an excellent carpenter and was a very hard-working man.  He helped anyone that needed help and loved Nebraska Football games.  Garry was a wonderful husband, father, and grandfather.  His family was his life.  He loved his home at the lake.  You never saw Garry in the last few years that he didn’t have a book in his hand.  He loved puzzles, crossword, scratch tickets, and Texas Hold’em.  If anyone mentioned gambling, he was ready to go!  His other favorite things to do were pitching horseshoes, fishing with the grandkids, and metal detecting because he always knew he would find a treasure.

He is survived by his loving wife of 57 plus years, Karen of North Platte; daughters, Debra Dodge and Susan Yager both of North Platte; son, Garry Dodge Jr. and Monica of North Platte; grandchildren, Jason Haines and Calley, Jeremy Haines and Riley, Logan (Mackenzie) Yager, Melissa Dodge, Christian Dodge, and Cory Dodge; great-grandchildren, Shelby, Faith, Ava, Daelynn, and Will; numerous nieces, nephews, and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; twin brother, Larry; brothers, Ernie, Dean, and Wayne; sister-in-law, Gerry; father and mother-in-law, June and Ilene Leibhart; sister-in-law, Deanna Harriman; and nephews, Dennis and Duane Harriman.

Emerald ash borer confirmed at Mahoney State Park

Emerald ash borer (EAB) was discovered at Eugene T. Mahoney State Park (SP) on June 6 and has been confirmed by a state entomologist.

Nebraska Department of Agriculture (NDA) staff found EAB in a baited trap at the park’s Lakeside Campground.

EAB is an invasive beetle native to Asia. It kills ash trees when its larvae feed on the inner bark, disrupting the tree’s ability to transport water and nutrients.

Since first discovered in the United States in 2002, EAB has spread to 33 states and Canada. EAB first was discovered in Nebraska in Omaha and Greenwood in June of 2016. The Mahoney SP discovery and confirmation of EAB is the fourth in eastern Nebraska since in 2016.

NDA has conducted surveys at several Nebraska Game and Parks Commission properties for the past 10 years. Staff of NDA, United States Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, Nebraska Forest Service and Game and Parks have suspected for several years that EAB might be present in Nebraska. All believed survey traps and routine inspections were important.

Game and Parks began a Voluntary Firewood Restriction at all of its state park areas in 2013 to help prevent or limit the ultimate discovery of EAB on its properties. This ban asks all nonresident visitors not to bring firewood from any other state into state park areas. Game and Parks offers a free firewood exchange at 10 major parks and recreation areas to those who brought wood from other states. The ban also asks that any resident or nonresident visitors acquire their firewood within 50 miles of their park destination rather than bring it from home. Visitors to Nebraska’s state park areas are allowed to collect deadfall wood on the ground for burning in their campfires.

Game and Parks staff will treat select ash trees at Mahoney State Park. Initial extensive removal or clearing of trees in the park is not expected. Game and Parks is concerned about the safety of its park visitors. Any trees that are deemed hazardous during routine inspections will be removed to protect visitors and their property.

Authorities say 2 people killed in Sarpy County collision

PAPILLION, Neb. (AP) — Authorities say two people have been killed in a Sarpy County collision.

The collision occurred just before 4 p.m. Monday on Nebraska Highway 50, a few miles west of Papillion (puh-PIHL’-yuhn). The Sarpy County Sheriff’s Office says a northbound minivan crossed a median and ran into a southbound pickup truck. Two other vehicles sustained only minor damage after their drivers took evasive action.

The minivan driver and his female adult passenger were pronounced dead at the scene. A 5-year-old girl with them was taken to Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha.

The pickup driver was taken to another Omaha hospital. The Sheriff’s Office says the people in the two other vehicles weren’t injured.

The names of those involved haven’t been released.
