Veterans greeted with handshakes and applause at new home

GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (AP) — Veterans moving into their new Kearney home have been greeted with handshakes and applause.

Gov. Pete Ricketts, Kearney Mayor Stan Clouse and other officials were on hand Wednesday as the veterans arrived at the new Central Nebraska Veterans Home in Kearney. They moved 34 miles west (55 kilometers) from the old facility in Grand Island.

Grand Island, Kearney, Hastings and North Platte had all competed for the project to replace the outdated, 225-bed Grand Island facility.

The new, $89 million campus has six neighborhoods of sorts, which each feature three homes that can accommodate 12 to 15 veterans in private rooms.

State dismissed from lawsuit over mental patient treatment

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — The state of Nebraska and its Health and Human Services Department have been dismissed from a lawsuit that alleged the state violated rules and regulations in diagnosing and treating mentally ill patients.

A federal judge ruled last week that Dr. Farid Karimi’s claims against the state and the department are barred by sovereign immunity. Judge Laurie Smith Camp said the alleged deficiencies may have violated the patients’ constitutional rights, but they did not violate Karimi’s constitutional rights. She allowed the lawsuit to continue against three officials, however.

Karimi alleges that he reported procedural and medical violations several months after he started working at the Lincoln Regional Center in February 2016. The lawsuit says officials didn’t take any action to correct violations and instead retaliated against Karimi.

Man imprisoned for 2 Omaha robberies

Edward Sherrod

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A man who pleaded guilty to two Omaha robberies has been imprisoned.

U.S. District Court records say Edward Sherrod was sentenced Monday to 90 months in prison and was ordered to pay nearly $19,500 in restitution. He’d pleaded guilty to two robbery counts after prosecutors agreed to drop a third count.

The records say he used a toy gun and nylon masks to cover his face when he robbed a Baker’s supermarket on July 5, 2017, and a Mega Mart on July 24, 2017. Prosecutors say a witness got the license number of a car Sherrod used for the Mega Mart heist, and investigators traced it to a rental company. He was arrested when he returned the car to the rental office.

Bull rider dies after being stomped in Denver competition

DENVER (AP) — A professional bull rider died after a bull stomped on his chest during a competition at the National Western Stock Show in Denver.

The Professional Bull Riders say Mason Lowe died Tuesday evening after being taken to a hospital. Group spokesman Andrew Giangola said he was wearing a mandated protective vest.

The 25-year-old from Exeter, Missouri, was ranked 18th in the world.

He was injured while coming out of a chute on a bull weighing about 1,700 pounds (771 kilograms) and attempting to stay on for eight seconds.

A witness told KCNC-TV that Lowe fell off and was stomped as he tried to get up.

Professional Bull Riders CEO Sean Gleason says the group and the stock show extend sympathies to Lowe’s family.

Deputies find missing girl they tracked through snow

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — The Lancaster County sheriff says deputies have found a missing 12-year-old girl they tracked through the snow on a frigid morning.

Sheriff Terry Wagner says the girl had left her home around 5:45 a.m. Wednesday after arguing with her sister. The family called for help, and two of the seven deputies dispatched found tracks that led them to the girl around 8 a.m.

Wagner says she was huddled in a ravine about a half-mile from her house, which sits about 5 miles (8 kilometers) east of Lincoln. She had a robe with her and was wearing snow boots.

She was taken to a hospital for treatment of possible hypothermia. It was 28 degrees Fahrenheit (-2.22 Celsius) at the time.

Her name wasn’t released.

Shopko files for bankruptcy protection

ASHWAUBENON, Wis. (AP) — Wisconsin-based retail chain Shopko Stores has filed for bankruptcy protection as it makes plans to close more stores.

The company says excessive debt and ongoing competitive pressure are forcing it to seek protection from creditors. Shopko is reporting assets of less than $1 billion and liabilities of between $1 billion and $10 billion.

Shopko says it plans to continue operating through Chapter 11 reorganization after securing $480 million in financing from a group of lenders led by Wells Fargo Bank. The financing will allow Shopko to continue to pay employees, vendors and suppliers.

The retailer, headquartered near Green Bay, says it will close 38 more stores. Last month, it announced plans to close about 40 of its more than 300 stores across the country.

Michigan State president faces ouster amid Nassar fallout

DETROIT (AP) — Michigan State University’s Board of Trustees will seek to oust interim President John Engler if he doesn’t resign amid criticism of comments he has made about victims of imprisoned ex-sports medicine doctor Larry Nassar, a trustee said Wednesday.

Brian Mosallam told The Associated Press that the “the votes are there” to force Engler out at a special board meeting scheduled Thursday at the East Lansing school.

Mosallam said he understood that board Chairwoman Dianne Byrum has reached out to Engler. Both Byrum and Mosallam are Democrats, and Engler is a former Republican governor of Michigan.

In an editorial board meeting Friday with The Detroit News, Engler said women sexually assaulted by the now-imprisoned Nassar have been in the “spotlight” and are “still enjoying that moment at times, you know, the awards and recognition.”

Nassar, who molested hundreds of girls and women while employed at Michigan State, is now serving a decades-long prison sentence for molesting patients and possessing child pornography.

The AP left messages Thursday seeking comment from Engler, who was hired last February following the January 2018 resignation of president Lou Anna Simon following the Nassar scandal.

Mosallam, a long-time Engler critic, said Wednesday on Twitter that “JOHN ENGLER’S REIGN OF TERROR IS OVER.” His tweet followed a post by Byrum announcing Thursday’s meeting.

After Engler was hired by the board, Michigan State agreed to a $500 million settlement with 332 women and girls who said they were sexually assaulted by Nassar. Of that, $75 million will cover future claims.

In April, Engler told another university official in emails that the first woman to go public with her accusations about Nassar was probably getting a “kickback” from her attorney.

The elected board has five Democrats, two Republicans and an appointee who was named last month by then-Gov. Rick Snyder. The board’s makeup became more Democratic in the November election. Engler served as Michigan’s governor from 1991 through 2002.

The university fired Nassar in 2016, two years after he was the subject of a sexual assault investigation. He also worked with the U.S. Olympic gymnastics team.

2 men held after 220 pounds of pot found in SUV along I-80

YORK, Neb. (AP) — Authorities say two men were arrested after officers found an estimated $600,000 worth of marijuana in their sport utility vehicle along Interstate 80 in eastern Nebraska.

The York News-Times reports that a deputy pulled over the SUV for a traffic violation Tuesday night in York County. Sheriff’s Lt. Josh Gillespie says the deputy grew suspicious and asked for consent to search the vehicle. None was given, so a drug K-9 was sent to the scene. It alerted officers to the presence of drugs.

Gillespie says deputies searched the SUV and found six suitcases that held a total of around 220 pounds (100 kilograms) of pot.

York County Court records don’t show the two men traveling in the SUV have been formally charged.
