Omaha fire union head pleads no contest in assault case

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — The president of Omaha firefighters union accused of assaulting a woman at a bar in November has pleaded no contest to two misdemeanor charges in the case.

The Omaha World-Herald reports that 49-year-old Steve LeClair entered the pleas Thursday to misdemeanor assault and disorderly conduct. A no contest plea is not an admission of guilt, but acknowledges that prosecutors have enough evidence to convict. LeClair faces up to six months in jail when he’s sentenced June 13.

Police investigated after a woman accused LeClair of punching her in her back when she ignored his sexually-charged comments and asked him to leave her alone. The woman, who is black, also says LeClair whispered the words “white power” in her ear before hitting her. LeClair has denied the allegations, but his attorney on Thursday said LeClair elbowed the woman, adding, “It was kind of like a nudge. She obviously felt it was harder than that.”

LeClair was fired from the fire department in February.

Drinking water problems linger long after flooding

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Several communities along the Missouri River continue to struggle to restore drinking water service weeks after massive flooding swept through the area.People who live in the affected Nebraska and Iowa towns have had to adjust to boiling water before drinking it or relying on bottled water while officials work to repair the damage. The challenges each town faces after last month’s flooding differs, but they share the goal of restoring safe drinking water service quickly.

Last month’s flooding caused more than $3 billion damage in Nebraska, Iowa, Kansas, and Missouri when spring rain and melting snow combined to overwhelm area rivers and inundate towns and land. But the damage is still being tallied.

In Glenwood, Iowa, officials used a boat this week to reach one of their three wells inside the water treatment plant and make repairs, while the other two wells remain underwater. But getting a well up and running is only part of the process. Glenwood City Administrator Angie Winquist said the city’s water pipes and towers need to be flushed and refilled before the water can be tested.

“It will be at least a couple more weeks, but that’s better than a couple of months,” Winquist said.

Restoring drinking water is so time-consuming, in part, because of all the steps required to ensure the water is safe. For instance, once the damage has been repaired and the system refilled, the water must test clean several times on different days.

So Glenwood will continue trucking in more than 6,000-gallon tanks of water to provide the roughly 275,000 gallons its residents are using each day.

Across the Missouri River in Plattsmouth, Nebraska, officials said it could be six months before they get their water treatment plant operating again. Fortunately, that Omaha-area city was able to connect to a nearby rural water system, but it doesn’t have the same capacity, meaning residents must continue conserving water.

About 50 miles further south, the flooding forced Peru State College to close for two days. Students were able to return because the campus itself wasn’t flooded, but the city’s water still isn’t drinkable.

Peru State spokesman Jason Hogue said more than 900,000 gallons of bottled water has been donated to the school since the flooding began. The city has been trucking water in from two nearby cities because its water plant remains flooded, but the water has to be boiled before it can be consumed.

Perhaps the biggest problem for some Peru State students and employees is that road closures have drastically increased their commute.

Hogue said it used to take about 30 minutes to drive to Hamburg, Iowa, but now it’s more like 2 hours. The school has offered discounted housing on campus to affected students and employees.

Hamburg was also hard hit by the flooding, and much of the town remains flooded because the water flowed behind a damaged levee and can’t return to the river on its own.

An emergency well was dug for Hamburg, but the boil order remains in effect.

Hamburg School Superintendent Mike Wells said the water system isn’t operating at full capacity, so half the school has flush toilets while the other half has to use portable toilets outside.

“The kids think they have it pretty tough,” Wells said. He joked that some have been trying to tell their grandparents about how bad they have it by using outhouses at school.

The school’s gym has been converted to a store of sorts where Hamburg residents can come to get supplies and help, and that will likely continue through the summer. Wells said the school is doing more outside activities and some dance in the classroom for exercise.

After the flooding, 20 of Hamburg’s 161 students transferred to schools in other towns. Another 32 are commuting to Hamburg to finish out the school year.

Wells said losing that many students would be a blow to his district, but he’s optimistic the town will recover.

“We have a strong community,” Wells said. “This will give us the opportunity to do things better.”

Flood forces 2 Nebraska Passport stops out of 2019 program

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Two Nebraska Passport stops affected by widespread flooding have withdrawn from this year’s program.

The Nebraska Tourism Commission said Thursday that Niobrara State Park in Niobrara and The Tow Line, a bar and grill at the Fremont State Recreation Area, will no longer participate.

Both stops will be featured on the 2020 Nebraska Passport. They’ll still be open this summer, but the temporary closure of Highway 12 has made access to Niobrara State Park more difficult than normal. Portions of Fremont State Recreation Area may be closed while repairs are made.

The stops have been replaced with Fia + Belle, a Fremont antique and clothing shop, and Ponca State Park in Ponca.

The Nebraska Passport program encourages residents and visitors to collect stamps at tourist spots throughout the state.

Ieleen Marjorie Larsen

Ieleen Marjorie Larsen, 95, of Lincoln, Nebraska, died at the Monarch Hospice House in Lincoln on Wednesday, April 3, 2019.  Ieleen was born January 17, 1924, in Marquette, Nebraska to Alfred and
Agnes Serine (Andersen) Nissen.  She grew up on the family farm and graduated from Marquette High School in 1941.  She attended Grand Island Business College and worked for Radio Intelligence of the Federal Communication Division in Grand Island, Nebraska.
Ieleen married Gilbert Danhauer Larsen on April 3, 1944, in Kronberg, Nebraska and they made their home near Marquette where they farmed.  Together they raised two children, Twila and Dan. They moved to North Platte, Nebraska in 1961 where Ieleen worked for Schweser’s Clothing and later the Internal Revenue Service for 10 years.

She was very committed to a strong relationship with God and supported many activities within the First United Methodist Church of North Platte where she was an active member of the United Methodist Women.  She was also an active member of the North Platte Shrine Auxiliary and supported the Salvation Army.

Ieleen was an excellent cook, sharing recipes from her Danish heritage for all to enjoy. She was a gracious hostess at holiday celebrations, with family traveling from throughout the U.S. to enjoy her warm welcome and family traditions.  Ieleen appreciated the beauty of flowers and planted lovely flower gardens around her home. Gifts of bouquets always delighted her and she would lovingly tend to them, extending the life of each blossom to enjoy their beauty as long as possible. She taught herself to play the piano and xylophone at a young age and entertained  her family and church congregation with her talent.

Ieleen’s spirit of nurturing was evident in the love and care she gave to her family. Her marriage to Gib lasted 66 years and they were known as an inspiration to all who saw their enduring bonds of devotion. Her children and grandchildren knew they could always depend on her wise guidance and comfort in times of need.

V. Joan West

Verona “Joan” West, 89, of Curtis, Nebraska went to be with her Heavenly Father on April 2, 2019 at Kearney, Nebraska.

Joan was born one of twin daughters on November 21, 1929 to John and Dorothy Durner of Wellfleet, Nebraska.  She attended Bell Prairie Grade School and graduated from the Nebraska School of Agriculture.  Following a semester of college, she married Truman “Jake” West of Hayes Center, Nebraska in December 1946.  Two daughters, Linda (Evans) and Marilyn (Cole) were born and raised on the family farm.  She farmed side-by-side with her husband for 19 years before moving to Curtis.  She was an Administrative Assistant to Ernest Nelson of the Farm Bureau, Dr. Everett Stencil of the Medicine Valley Veterinary Hospital, and Wayne Heather at the NRD before retiring.  She was a member of the Methodist church in Curtis, NE.

Joan had a special place in her heart for all farm animals, especially the horses.  She loved riding her favorite horse, Twister, with the Frontier Wranglerettes.  You might say her farm life continued in Curtis with a very large strawberry patch and vegetable garden.  She was proud to display her custom-designed yard art, especially at Christmas.  Joan enjoyed the days of camping and fishing, especially with a pontoon boat.  She loved music, played in a band at an early age, and loved to dance with Jake.  The scalding hot coffee was always on at her home or on the boat, and you never left her house without eating something.  Her Pride and Joy were her grandchildren, watching and cheering them on at rodeos, games or wherever their life lead them.

She was preceded in death by her husband, daughter Marily, brother Merle Durner, in-laws Truman and Nellie West, and sisters-in-laws June Bahl and Delores Myers.

She is survived by her twin sister, Romona “Jean” Elson and sister-in-law Evelyn Durner.  Joan’s Legacy lives on with her daughter, Linda; grandchildren, Codi (Greg) Mortell of Susanville, California, Stacy Cole (Mike) of Lincoln, Nebraska, Kelli (Donnell) Brown of Throckmorton, Texas, Kory (Jodi) Evans of Lincoln, Nebraska and Jodi (Ryan) Propst of North Platte, Nebraska; great grandchildren, Nathan Mortell, LaMare and Satore King, Tucker (Karley) Brown, Lanham Brown, Jordan (Jacey) Evans and Mason Propst.

Funeral Services will be held at the Curtis Community Center, 301 Garlick Ave, Curtis, Nebraska on Tuesday, April 9, 2019 at 10:30 a.m. with Greg Boller officiating.  Burial will follow in the Curtis Cemetery, Curtis, Nebraska.  To sign the guest book, go to www.blasestrauser.com

Bill to allow sales tax for ‘Beatrice Six’ payment advances

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) – A Nebraska county that owes $28.1 million for the wrongful convictions of six people in a 1985 murder case is one step closer to imposing a new half-cent sales tax to pay off the judgment faster.

State lawmakers gave initial approval Thursday to a bill that would let Gage County authorize the tax to help cover its legal debt to the so-called Beatrice Six.

Supporters say the measure would ease the burden on homeowners and farmers who will otherwise cover most of the expense through property taxes, which were increased in September.

The Gage County Board of Supervisors endorsed the legislation and is likely to approve the sales tax increase. Nebraska lawmakers made clear they won’t approve a state-funded bailout for the county.

The measure advanced on a 40-0 vote.

Inquiry launched into Omaha school district pension fund

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) – Documents show the U.S. Department of Justice has launched a preliminary inquiry into the Omaha Public Schools pension fund.

The Omaha World-Herald reports that the Omaha School Employees’ Retirement System gave notice of the inquiry to staff in a memorandum last month. The memo says staff and trustees must maintain all records, emails and texts regarding their role.

The inquiry comes after the newspaper’s January investigation found that mismanagement and bad investment decisions at the retirement system caused a more than $770 million shortfall. The school district has had to make budget cuts to compensate.

Donald Erikson is president of the system’s trustees. He says in the memo that trustees plan to cooperate with the inquiry and “don’t believe that it will lead to anything to be concerned about.”
