Someone has been using North Platte homes and vehicles as target practice for their paintball guns.

According to North Platte Police, since March 31, 2019, officers have responded to several dozen reports of residences and vehicles that had been hit with paintballs throughout the city.

Officer Beth Kerr says there have been no witnesses to the acts of vandalism and no suspects have been identified at this time.

Kerr said the damage caused by the incidents has been minimal.

If you have any information on who may be responsible, contact the North Platte Police Department or give your tip anonymously to Crimestoppers at 1-800-933-TIPS.

Trina Marie (Vigil) Briones, age 48, of Casper, Wyoming, died under hospice care and with her family at her side, on Thursday, March 28, 2019, in Casper.

Trina was born October 25, 1970, in North Platte to Dave Tony and Janet Lea (Anderson) Vigil.  She grew up in North Platte, Nebraska and Casper, Wyoming and graduated from North Platte High School with the Class of 1990.  Trina was married to Pat Casillas in North Platte and later married David Briones and they lived in Casper.

Woman buys out closing Payless store to donate to Nebraska

Addy Tritt, FHSU grad, stands in the Hays Payless with some of the shoes she bought for Nebraska flood victims.

HAYS, Kan. (AP) – A Kansas woman donated 204 pairs of shoes to Nebraska flood victims after buying all the remaining shoes at a Payless store that was closing.

The Hutch Post reports the shoes were part of a flood relief shipment taken to farmers in Nebraska by Fort Hays State’s agriculture sorority, Sigma Alpha, during the weekend.

Addy Tritt, a Fort Hays State graduate, said she wanted to help others because so many people have helped her in the past.

When the price at a Hays store dropped to $1 per pair, Tritt negotiated with the business to buy the remaining shoes for $100.

They included 162 pairs of baby shoes, two pairs of men’s shoes, and the rest were women’s shoes.

The retail price of the shoes would have been more than $6,000.

Man pleads guilty in gang-related Omaha slaying

Tontavious Montgomery

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) – A June sentencing has been scheduled for a 27-year-old man accused of killing a member of a rival Omaha gang.

Douglas County District Court records say Tontavious Montgomery pleaded guilty Monday to manslaughter and possession of a firearm. Prosecutors dropped a charge of first-degree murder and a weapons count in return for Montgomery’s pleas. His sentencing is set for June 20.

Prosecutors say Montgomery and Alphonso Hall III shot to death 22-year-old Terrance Gunn in May 2016. Hall pleaded guilty last year to manslaughter and was sentenced to 15 to 20 years in prison.

The case against Montgomery was delayed while he spent time at the state psychiatric hospital in Lincoln. He was found competent for trial, which was scheduled to begin Monday.

1 of 4 people charged in slaying takes plea deal

Alisia Cooke
PAPILLION, Neb. (AP) – A woman charged with murder in an Omaha suburb has pleaded guilty to a lesser charge.

Sarpy County District Court records say 28-year-old Omaha resident Alisia Cooke entered the plea last month to a charge of second-degree murder. Prosecutors lowered the charge from first-degree murder and dropped three related charges in return for Cooke’s plea. Her next hearing is scheduled for Sept. 6.

The records say Cooke and three other people were charged after the stabbing death of 38-year-old Brent Quigley during a robbery attempt at his home in Bellevue last June. Christopher Reagan and Raymond Davis have pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder, robbery and other charges. Krystal Martin has pleaded not guilty to an accessory charge.

Trials have been scheduled for all three.

Nebraska water official struggles to find money for repairs

Spencer Dam

SPENCER, Neb. (AP) – A rural water district official is worried about how to provide water for the thousands of people and cattle in his northern Nebraska county after a wall of water, ice and debris swept away a vital pipe.

Rex Black is the volunteer board chairman for the water district in Boyd County. He tells the Omaha World-Herald that the district will likely have to pay $400,000 to temporarily fix 1,500 feet (460 meters) of pipe that crosses beneath the Niobrara River and carries drinking water to the county.

Black says district officials are reaching out to private and business sectors for funding assistance. He’s also started a GoFundMe campaign to raise money.

It could likely take more than 40 days to get water running after repair work begins.

ACLU: Report shows evidence of ‘racially biased policing’

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) – The American Civil Liberties Union of Nebraska says a state report illustrates the need for police officers to undergo new training to treat minority motorists more fairly.

The ACLU said Monday that the latest Nebraska Crime Commission report shows “racially biased policing is a persistent problem in Nebraska.”

The report echoed numbers in previous reports: The number of black drivers stopped, searched and arrested is far higher than their portion of the state’s overall population. It also says black drivers were twice as likely to be stopped last year as white drivers.

ACLU of Nebraska attorney Rose Godinez says the data confirms “there is a clear need to recalibrate. We can’t continue to do the same things in terms of police training and watch the data about racial disparities in policing continue to rise.”

Sheriff says man killed in fiery crash just outside of York

YORK, Neb. (AP) – York County authorities say a 58-year-old man died after his vehicle hit a landscaping rock and erupted in flames.

The accident was reported around 11:50 p.m. Saturday on U.S. Highway 34 on the northeast side of York. The York News-Times reports that the westbound vehicle ran off the roadway onto a lawn and then headed eastward and hit the rock. Sheriff Paul Vrbka says it appears a fuel line ruptured upon impact and the vehicle was stuck atop the rock when the fire broke out. The driver’s body was found in the charred wreckage.

Vrbka identified the driver as Jimmy Winter, who lived in Utica. An autopsy was ordered.

Woman accused of setting fire to bar she was buying

Woman accused of setting fire to bar she was buying

ARNOLD, Neb. (AP) – A woman has been accused of setting fire to a bar she was buying in the central Nebraska town of Arnold.

Custer County Court records say 54-year-old Jane Chestnutt is charged with three felonies: arson, criminal mischief and burning to defraud an insurer.

Her attorney, P. Stephen Potter, said she plans to plead not guilty and will challenge the charges at a preliminary hearing.

The March 27 blaze last year heavily damaged Jim’s Bar. The bar owner says he was selling it to Chestnutt and her husband and that she had said she was having trouble making the payments.

Court records say she told an investigator that she accidentally knocked over and broke a whiskey bottle and then set a flame to the spilled whiskey to see whether it would burn. She said it ignited and that she fled the bar when she was unable to put out the fire.
