Ex-Bellevue teacher pleads no contest in child porn case

BELLEVUE, Neb. (AP) – A former suburban Omaha middle school teacher has pleaded no contest to four counts after police say hundreds of images of child pornography were found on a computer he had taken to a shop for repairs.

The Omaha World-Herald reports that 46-year-old Roger Jaeger pleaded Monday to four counts of possession of child pornography. He faces up to 80 years in prison when he’s sentenced July 22 in Sarpy County District Court.

Jaeger was a science teacher at Logan-Fontenelle Middle School in Bellevue when he was arrested in February. Investigators say the shop where Jaeger’s computer was being repaired called police after finding the images.

Jaeger had been with the Bellevue Public Schools since 2003. He resigned and the school board accepted the resignation in March.

Property tax drive loses sponsor, but still moving forward

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A petition drive intended to lower the tax burden on Nebraska property owners has lost one of its high-profile sponsors but is still moving forward.

Paul Von Behren, president of the TRUE Nebraskans ballot campaign, confirmed Monday that Doug Kagan, of Omaha, has withdrawn as a petition sponsor. Kagan is the president of Nebraska Taxpayers for Freedom, a group that advocates for lower taxes and government spending cuts.

Von Behren says the separation happened because of a disagreement over the group’s leadership. He says the campaign has gained momentum since Kagan left and is still gathering signatures to place the issue on the 2020 ballot.

The ballot measure would guarantee taxpayers a refund equal to 35 percent of their local property tax payments.

Better weather helps Nebraska farmers plant corn, soybeans

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) – Good weather enabled Nebraska farmers to make progress in planting crops last week, but they remain behind historic averages.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture reports that for the week ending Sunday, there were five days suitable for field works.

Thanks to the better weather, farmers managed to raise the amount of corn planted to 70% of the anticipated crop. That’s still behind the 86% planted last year and for the five-year average. About 27% of the corn crop had emerged, significantly behind the 49% last year and for the five-year average.

For soybeans, farmers had planted 40% of the crop, behind last year’s 64% and the 54% average.

Abortion-rights supporters to rally at Nebraska Capitol

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) – Supporters of abortion rights are set to rally at the Nebraska Capitol as part of a national campaign responding to states that have passed new abortion restrictions.

The free public event is set for noon Tuesday at the Nebraska Capitol and will include representatives of the American Civil Liberties Union of Nebraska and Planned Parenthood as well as state lawmakers. It’s sponsored by those groups and the Women’s Fund of Omaha.

The rally will take place beneath the Nebraska Capitol rotunda on the building’s second floor if it rains.

Organizers ask that participants be respectful and observe the Capitol’s rules for such events. Participants aren’t allowed to block entrances to the building, and signs must be handheld and are not allowed inside the Capitol.

Man accused of Medicare fraud scheme in Nebraska, Iowa

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) – Authorities say an Omaha man defrauded Medicare and Medicaid in a scheme involving recipients in Nebraska, Iowa and other states.

A U.S. District Court complaint filed earlier this month says Nereus Sutko committed health care fraud that began in November 2010 and continued into this month. Sutko’s attorney, Adam Sipple, said Monday that Sutko will plead not guilty. Sipple declined to comment further about the allegations.

The documents say Sutko sometimes visited homeless shelters and threw pizza parties at nursing homes, promising gifts as a way to obtain Social Security and health information for his scheme. The documents say Sutko would order health care items that would never be delivered to the recipients.

Sutko is alleged to have filed 1,666 Medicare claims through the company he managed, Better Lives, getting more than $674,000. Assistant U.S. Attorney Mike Norris says he can’t yet specify how much money Sutko is alleged to have fraudulently profited through his scheme.

Car driver dies in collision with cement truck

MEAD, Neb. (AP) – Authorities say a car driver was killed in a collision between a cement truck and her car in eastern Nebraska’s Saunders County.

The crash occurred just before 7 a.m. Monday on U.S. Highway 77/Nebraska Highway 92, about 2½ miles west of Mead.

Authorities say the westbound car crossed into oncoming traffic and hit the truck. The truck driver was taken to a hospital.

The names of those involved and other details haven’t been released.

Pamela Sue Szwanek (1960-2019)

Pamela Sue Szwanek, 59, of North Platte, died unexpectedly at home on
Tuesday, May 14, 2019.

Pam was born May 4, 1960, to Faylin Swain and Arleen Olive (Gass) Finch
in North Platte.  She grew up in North Platte where she attended public
schools and was a member of 4-H for many years.  She won several awards
with her horse, Miss Tin Cup, and puppy, Buttercup, and rode in several
NebraskaLand Days parades.

After high school, Pam married Robert Duane ‘Bob’ Mills in Omaha.  They
lived in Lexington for a while, had three kids and later divorced.  Pam
moved back to North Platte where she attended Mid-Plains Community
College.  She received her CNA then worked at the North Platte Care
Center.  Pam later went back to Mid-Plains and took classes in cake
baking, cake decorating and bookkeeping.

On June 23, 1988, Pam wed Kirk Edward Szwanek in North Platte. The
couple did some traveling with Kirk’s job on the railroad and lived in
Juanita for a short time before returning to North Platte.

Pam had a kind heart and enjoyed spending time at home.  She loved kids
and animals, especially her puppies, and was a good sketch artist and
published poet.

She leaves behind her husband, Kirk, of North Platte; mother, Arleen
Young, of Sutherland; daughters, Tara Sturghill (Julio), of Nesbitt,
Mississippi and Heather Mills (Gary Oeltjen), of Hastings;
grandchildren, Adam Canell, Jacob Trejo, Sabrina Mills Torres, Samantha
Mills DeCent, Sydney Reed, Destaney Mills, Angel Mills Behrens, Robert
Mills, Jr., Robbie Mills III and Starr Mills; and great-grandson, Mateo
Trejo.

Survivors also include her half sister, Tracy DeLaet, of Broken Bow;
stepmother, Diane Oreter, of North Platte; stepbrother, Steve Young, of
Cheyenne, Wyoming; stepsisters, Carol (Mike) Farmer, of Chesapeake,
Virginia, Donna (Stan) Johnson, of Nolanville, Texas and Debra (Marty)
Myers, of Cheyenne, Wyoming; brothers-in-law, Dave (Mary) Szwanek, of
North Platte, Jeff (Robin) Szwanek, of Lincoln and Rod (Lori) Szwanek,
of Omaha; mother-in-law, Mary Szwanek, of North Platte; several nieces,
nephews and other family.

Pam was preceded in death by her father, Faylin Finch; son, Robert
Mills; stepfather, James Young; father-in-law, Adrian Szwanek; and
sister-in-law, Shirley Szwanek.

Cremation was chosen.  Memorial Service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, May
22, 2019, at Odean Colonial Chapel at C & Sycamore with Rev. Dr. Douglas
A. Delp officiating.  The memorial book may be signed at odeanchapel.com
or prior to the service at Odean Colonial Chapel at C & Sycamore, which
is in charge of arrangements.  In lieu of flowers, memorials are to the
North Platte Animal Shelter or Paws-itive Partners to help pets in need.

Nebraska lawmaker warns of Offutt Air Force Base’s gear loss

OFFUTT AIR FORCE BASE, Neb. (AP) – A Nebraska congressman is pushing the Air Force’s emergency request for $234 million to replace equipment and crew training simulators damaged by floodwaters that inundated the Offutt Air Force Base this spring.

The Omaha World-Herald reports Rep. Don Bacon recently brought attention to the funding request in a letter to a House subcommittee.

Bacon warned of the loss of defense capabilities that commanders are already experiencing in the field after the severe flooding in March.

The request comes in addition to the $420 million Air Force officials are seeking to repair and rebuild at the base.

The House passed a disaster assistance bill earlier this month. The Senate hasn’t taken action.

Air Force Secretary Heather Wilson says the base’s recovery work will stop July 1 if emergency funds aren’t issued.
