OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Omaha Mayor Jean Stothert says Nebraska’s largest city is prepared for an invasion of a tiny menace that has killed millions of ash trees in 26 states since 2002.
Stothert balked Friday at plans to hire more tree trimmers and buy tree removal equipment in anticipation of an emerald ash borer infestation. That came after several Omaha City Council members said they’re considering amending the city’s 2016 budget following a briefing from the city’s forester.
Stothert says the Nebraska Forest Service recommends beginning to treat ash trees when the ash borer has been confirmed within 15 miles. But the closest to Omaha the insect has been spotted is about 100 miles away in Iowa.
