Lincoln, Neb.- The Nebraska football team continued its 2015 Fall Camp Saturday night, as the Huskers practiced outside on the Ed and Joyanne Gass practice fields for about two hours in half pads (helmets and shoulder pads).
Defensive Coordinator Mark Banker met with media following practice, as Coach Banker mentioned that despite not having contact in practice so far during fall camp, the Blackshirts have been really competing well.
“The one thing we have had a good opportunity to do without the pads is personnel, we have got a pretty good read on probably about two or three situations going on with guys in rotations,” Banker said. “Everyone is in competition with each other right now.”
Banker also mentioned that some of the Blackshirt newcomers have been really impressive so far during Fall Camp and in the weight room.
“One thing is they really look good in uniform. They have come in good shape, a guy like DaiShon Neal, he has put on some mass, he is up to 270 right now, and it seems to be decent weight,” Banker said. “Alex Davis has added more strength—he is a clean slate, so that is kind of neat. The strength and conditioning coaches appreciate a guy like that to because he has got the stature and structure and he has improved not so much weight wise but strength wise.
Banker added, “(Tyrin) Ferguson right now is very impressive physically looking, he made good strides on his own before he got here and then did a nice job when he was here,” he said. “The same thing for Mohamed Barry, he came in late but he trains with one of the former Husker players and he came in great shape as well.”
Practice Notes
- Junior Grand Island native Sam Foltz continues to impress early in camp, routinely hitting punts better than 50 yards.
- Vincent Valentine was limited at practice Saturday night due to a knee bruise.
Quote of the Night
Coach Banker on Kevin Williams
“He has done a good job, we have had that conversation before—things that have happened to him in the past within the program. I have tried to help him with that, we had that conversation going back to December and obviously it runs deep with him. Obviously it is not about one person it is about everybody. That is what everybody needs to understand.”
