Jack McVeigh played for the Australian U-19 team this summer.
The Nebraska basketball team left Lincoln Friday morning to begin their nine-day trip to Spain. After a mid-afternoon flight from Omaha to Atlanta, the Huskers will have approximately a three-hour layover in Atlanta before departing for Madrid this evening. The Huskers will fly overnight and arrive Saturday morning (approx. 3 a.m. Lincoln time) and have a short workout to help adjust to the seven-hour time difference.

McVeigh, who played this summer for the Australian U-19 team at the FIBA U-19 World Championships, mentioned that the 24-second shot clock and the emphasis on traveling calls in the international game are the biggest differences in the style of play. Another distinct difference is on offensive rebounds, as the shot clock resets to 14 seconds as opposed to 30 seconds back in the college game.
“In the international game, when you get an offensive rebound, many times you will kick it back outside for a quick 3-pointer,” McVeigh said. “It changes that aspect of it.”
Two other differences he mentioned is that it only eight seconds to get the ball to half court, and it is two shots after every fifth foul per period, as opposed to one and the bonus after the seventh foul of each half.
