LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska coach Mike Riley is not setting a timetable for De’Mornay Pierson-El’s return from an injury.
Pierson-El broke his right foot while making a cut during a practice this week, and Riley initially said the wide receiver and return specialist probably would be out six to eight weeks.
Riley told reporters Thursday he believes Pierson-El would play “a good portion of this season,” but the coach said he doesn’t want to rush Pierson-El back.
Pierson-El is among eight receivers who’ve missed practices because of injuries. His biggest contributions have been on punt returns. He averaged 17.5 yards on 34 returns in 2014 and ran back three for touchdowns.
Jordan Westerkamp, the primary punt returner two seasons ago, will move back into that role in Pierson-El’s absence.
