The Nebraska football team practiced for just over 90 minutes in half pads on Monday afternoon in preparation for its upcoming game against Miami.  The defense practiced outside on the Ed and Joyanne Gass Practice Field, while the offense practiced in Memorial Stadium.

Defensive Coordinator Mark Banker spoke to the media following practice, highlighting some of the challenges his squad will face against Miami’s offensive weapons.

“They’ve got very, very capable receivers, good athletes [and] speed,” Banker said. “They’ve got a quarterback that’s got an extremely strong arm, an accurate arm.”

Banker also commented on a new Blackshirt. Junior linebacker Michael Rose-Ivey sported a Blackshirt in practice for the first time this season on Monday. Rose-Ivey was suspended for the first game against BYU, but earned the start against South Alabama last Saturday. Banker told the media that it was difficult to not give Rose-Ivey a Blackshirt at the start of the season.

“He worked extremely hard, he still had to work hard to rehabilitate himself, he had to gain trust in his knee, he had to learn a new system, play for a new set of coaches, he did a great job over the summer,” Banker said.  “He was one of the leaders coming out of summer camp, and he picked up where he left off. He was playing at a very high level. We had to shut him down a little bit and get other guys reps into the first game and then it came time to award the Blackshirts, [but] he still had to sit out a game and that was very difficult. So it was a pleasure giving him that shirt.”
