Lois Jean Buttermore, 89, of North Platte, NE, passed into God’s presence on Monday, November 2, 2015, with her family at her side after many years of battling Parkinson’s Disease and after many weeks of hospitalization.
Lois was born to John and Elizabeth Shaneyfelt on August 21, 1926, in Aurora, NE. She lived her early years in Aurora, briefly in Siloam Springs, AR, and then in Central City, NE where she graduated from high school in 1944. She completed a teaching degree in 1948 at York College in York, NE and it was during her senior year there that she met and fell in love with Leon M. Buttermore.
Lois and Leon were married on December 22, 1948, in Brighton, CO where she was a school teacher. They moved to North Platte in late 1949 and built their current home in 1959 where they raised their four children. Though her life centered around her family, she served in numerous capacities in her church and for a time with Christian Women’s Club.
Lois was greatly loved and blessed by her husband. Not only were they a wonderful twosome but she was a tremendous helpmate, mother, and friend. For the past eight years Leon was her extraordinary caregiver, especially after her broken hip in 2014. They were a marvelous example of marriage to the world!
Lois was forever changed in 1952 when she came to understand that she fell short of God’s perfect standard and that Jesus died to pay for her failings. Because at the foot of the cross she received Jesus Christ as her Savior, she received the promise of eternal life in heaven with Him. She studied the Bible diligently and lived by faith, desiring that all those around her would also accept Christ as their Savior.
Therefore, though we grieve our loss and will greatly miss her presence, we do not grieve as those who have no hope, but know that she now experiences the fullness of God’s glory. One day Jesus will call her body from its resting place to reunite her spirit with her body to live in perfection, joy, peace, and love with God forever.
Lois leaves behind her best friend and husband of nearly 67 years, Leon, of North Platte. She is also survived by their children, Kenneth (Janet Witham) of Gretna, NE, Karen (Jim Naramore) of Gillette, WY, Steve of Hill City, SD, and Jane (Don Moore) of Omaha, NE. She leaves 16 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren; a brother (the last of her seven siblings), Glenn (Lola) Shaneyfelt of Norfolk, NE; many extended family members; and a host of friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Elizabeth Shaneyfelt; three brothers, Lyle, Wayne and George Shaneyfelt; and three sisters, Gladys Swanson and Agnes and Lucille Shaneyfelt.
The family is very grateful to the staff at Great Plains Health 2West. We were wonderfully served.
Funeral service will be 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, November 4, 2015, at Grace Community Bible Church with Pastor Mike Wing officiating. Burial will follow in the North Platte Cemetery. Condolences may be shared at odeanchapel.com. Memorials are to Grace Community Bible Church. Odean Colonial Chapel at C & Sycamore is in charge of arrangements.
