The number of people killed on Nebraska roadways over a four-year period is up nearly ten percent, according to AAA Nebraska.

As of November 12, 2015, highway fatalities on Nebraska roadways have climbed to 200, reflecting an increase of ten percent compared to fatalities reported for the same period for the previous four years.

Motorcycle fatalities are up 33 percent compared to the average for the years 2011-2014 with 26 deaths reported so far this year.  This is the highest number of motorcycle fatalities reported since 1987 when 31 deaths occurred.  Pedestrian deaths are up 60 percent with 16 deaths reported so far this year.  This is the highest number since 2000 when 20 pedestrians were killed and nearly 500 injured.  Bicycle fatalities have also risen with four fatalities in 2015, which is the highest level since 2001.  That year, nearly 300 bicyclists were injured in traffic crashes and five were killed.

AAA is asking all motorists to be aware and respectful of all riders and users of the roadway.  Driving distractions, such as using a cell phone, take your eyes and mind off of the roadway.  Get in the habit of turning your phone off each time you get behind the wheel.
