
North Platte – The North Platte Community College Knights basketball team played their third consecutive game that went down to the wire when they defeated the McCook Community College Indians 95-93 on Wednesday night at the McDonald-Belton Gymnasium.
The Indians came out firing as they jumped out to a 22-10 lead behind the performance of Brody Sharkey. Sharkey had 11 points during the run.
McCook continued to lead throughout the first half, but the Knights began to chip away at the Indian lead and took the lead 47-46 on a pair of free throw by Diontae Champion, which was the halftime score.
The second half began with the Knights going on an 8-2 run to have their biggest lead 55-48 of the second half. The Indians tied the game at 61 after going on a 13-6 run.
The Indians led by seven with just above nine minutes to play. But the Knights came back and tied the score at 79 with about seven minutes to play.
Michael Mitchell hit a three pointer with 1:48 to play to give the Knights a three point lead 92-89. The Knights never trailed the rest of the game.
The Knights are 10-8 and 4-4 in South Sub-Region play. Tyree Peter had a career night scoring 30 points and grabbing 18 rebounds to lead the Knights. Leito Holloway finished with 19 points, Michael Mitchell scored 16 points and Tim Wagner finished with 15 points.
The Indians are now 13-5 and 4-4 in the South Sub-Region. They were led in scoring by Sharkey, who finished the game with 31 points. Three other Indians scored in double figures. Hakim Davis had 15 points, Brandon Goldsmith finished with 14 points and Lewis Diankulu ended with 12 points. Chuol Biel grabbed six rebounds to lead the Indians.
The Knights take to the road to play Region IX Division II opponent and Nebraska Community College Athletic conference foe Southeast Community College on Friday, January 22. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 pm CST.
