North Platte —The North Platte Community College Knights Softball team opened their 2016 season with a split against the Northeast Community College Lady Hawks winning the first game 11-4 and dropping the second game 11-8 in 10 innings.
In game one, the Lady Hawks had the early lead when Leah Grovijohn scored on a double by Alyson Romey in the first inning. The Knights scored four runs in the second inning to gain the lead 4-1. Shelby Clark had a double in the second inning to drive in two runs.
Shelley Heredia drove in two runs in the third inning to give the Knights a 6-1 lead.
The Lady Hawks cut the Knights lead to 6-4 in their half of the fourth on a triple by Ashley Gilsdorf and a sacrifice fly by Kelsie Myers.
The Knights added a run in the fifth and four in the sixth, including a two-run home run by Makenzi DeCrow.
Jessica Jarvis had three hits in the first game for the Lady Knights. Samantha Foster pitched six innings, allowing four runs and eight hits to get the win.
In the second game the Lady Hawks scored three runs off of Knights starting pitcher Shelby Belloni to take a 3-0 lead. Belloni lasted one inning and was replaced by Foster in the second inning. The Lady Hawks scored two runs to increase their lead to 5-0.
The Knights got on the scoreboard in their second inning on runs by Clark and Belloni to cut the Lady Hawks lead to 5-2.
Foster held the Lady Hawks scoreless through the seventh inning. Meanwhile, the Knights scored one run in the fifth inning and two in the seventh inning to send the game into extra innings.
In the eighth the Hawks scored one run and the Knights answered back with a run by Clark on a double by Belloni. Belloni was thrown out trying to stretch it into a triple.
Each team scored two runs in the ninth inning.
In the tenth the Lady Hawks had runs by Romey, Amy Rogers and Kylie Givins for the game winning runs.
Jarvis flied out to center to end the game.
Allie Vigil had three hits for the Knights including a double.
Lindsey Kvidera got the win for the Lady Hawks and Paige Schmidt recorded the save. Foster took the loss for the Knights.
The Lady Hawks are 1-3 on the season.
The Knights now 1-1 on the season and will travel to Borger, Texas to play Frank Philips College in doubleheaders on Feb 19 and 20.
