North Platte – The North Platte Community College Knights Softball team lost two games to the Western Nebraska Community College on Wednesday afternoon at the Wayne A. Dowhower Softball Complex 20-4 and 8-0.
In game one, the Cougars started the scoring early by scoring three runs in the first inning. The Cougars’ Kenzie Sawyer hit a two-run home run in the first. The Cougars added a run in the second to increase their lead to 4-0.
In the third inning, the Cougars exploded for eight runs. Back-to-back home runs by Jasmine Wessel and Sawyer, her second of the game, and a two-run home run by Whitney Fields put the Cougars ahead after two and a half innings 12-0.
The Knights scored their first run when Sara Villalobos drove in Jessica Jarvis to make the score 12-1.
The Cougars answered back with vengeance by scoring six runs in their half of the fourth. Wessel added her second home run in the game with a two-run shot.
The score after three and a half innings was 18-1 in favor of the Cougars.
The Knights’ Tara Crouch scored the Knights second run in the bottom of the fourth to make the score 18-2.
The Cougars answered back with two more runs in the top of the fifth. Fields hit her second home run with a two-run home run to increase the Cougars lead to 20-2.
The Knights did manage to put two more runs across the plate in the bottom of the fifth with runs by Villalobos and Jade Higgins.
In game two, the Knights managed one hit off of Cougars pitcher Whitney Fields, a fourth inning single by Shelby Belloni.
The Cougars continued to show their power by hitting four more home runs. Wessel and Sawyer each hit their third home run on the day. Haille Weber and Payten Davies each added one each. In both games the Cougars had 10 home runs.
The Cougars improve to 14-4 on the season.
The Knights drop to 2-13 on the season and will travel to Columbus on Friday to play Central Community College in a doubleheader. On Saturday, March 13, they will travel to Beatrice to face Southeast Community College in a doubleheader. Those four games will open up Region IX Division II play for the Knights. Game times for the Central games are at 3pm and 5pm CST. The Southeast games will be at noon and 2 pm.
