North Platte –The North Platte Community College Knights softball team were swept in a doubleheader by the Western Nebraska Community College Lady Cougars, 13-6 and 21-8 in a shortened five-inning game.
The games were originally scheduled for Monday in Scottsbluff. The forecast of inclement weather moved the game up to Saturday afternoon and to North Platte.
In game one, the Lady Cougars got on the scoreboard first. In the second inning, the Lady Cougars scored three runs. The first run was scored when Kenzie Sawyer singled, stole second and third base and scored on a groundout by Jasmine Wessel. The next hitter, Lauren Oxford homered over the centerfield fence to give the Cougars a 2-0 lead. The Cougars added another run in the inning when Payten Davies doubled to score Celyn Whitt.
In the bottom of the second, the Knights got a run back when Samantha Foster homered to center to cut the Lady Cougar lead to 3-1.
Sawyer and Wessel each scored a run to push the Lady Cougar lead to 5-1 in the top of the third.
Caroline Motis began the third inning singling to left field. She came around to score on a bases loaded walk to Foster. Makenzie DeCrow drove in Sami Gill and Sara Villalobos to bring the Knights within one at 5-4 in favor of the Lady Cougars.
In the top of the fifth, the Lady Cougars added to their lead by scoring five runs, including a two-run home run by Whitt to increase their lead to 10-4.
The Cougars added a run in the top of the sixth and two more runs in the seventh for their final run tally.
The Knights scored one run in each of the sixth and seventh inning.
In the second game, the story of the game was home runs. The Cougars had a total of eight home runs in the second game to account for 13 of the Cougars 21 runs. Weber hit three home runs and drove in six runs in game two. Five other Lady Cougars each hit one home run during game two. Oxford had four runs batted in on a home run and a single. Sawyer, Whitt and Christian Bobian also homered for the Lady Cougars
DeCrow scored two runs for the Knights in the second game and Foster hit her second home run of the day driving in Villalobos and Gill. Shelby Belloni, Tara Crouch and Allie Vigil each scored one run in game two for the Knights.
The Knights end the regular season at 15-28. The Knights will be the number one seed in the Region IX Division II tournament in Columbus starting on April 28.
The Lady Cougars are now 45-10 on the season. The Lady Cougars have two games remaining in the regular season.
