LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A man who spent 20 years on Nebraska’s death row for killing two women has died in prison.

A corrections spokesman says 60-year-old Randolph Reeves died at the Nebraska State Penitentiary just before 11:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Spokesman Andrew Nystrom says Reeves is believed to have died of natural causes.

Reeves was sentenced to death in 1981 for the murders of 30-year-old Janet Mesner and 28-year-old Victoria Lamm in Lincoln the previous year.

He came within 40 hours of being executed in 1999 before the state Supreme Court withdrew his death warrant to hear a last-minute appeal. Reeves was resentenced to life in prison without parole in 2001 after justices ruled that three-judge panels must be unanimous when imposing a death sentence.

A grand jury will investigate Reeves’ death.
