Virginia Lee Hornbacher, age 87 of North Platte, passed away Saturday, September 10, 2016 with her family by her side. She was born on November 20, 1928 in the family home at 519 West 5th Street, North Platte, NE to Verne R. and Sarah E. (Kelly) Taylor. Virginia graduated from North Platte High School and later attended the University of Nebraska in Lincoln. On June 18, 1950, she was united in marriage to Kenneth D. Hornbacher. During his military service in the Marine Corp. the couple lived in various states including, California, Virginia and North Carolina. Following his discharge, they moved back to North Platte where they raised their family. She and her husband owned and operated a printing business, and in 1978 they sold their business and moved to Guam. While there, she ran the Honey Hut and worked at the Gold Exchange and Mariana’s Boutique. Following his death, she returned to North Platte in 1988. Virginia worked as an Estee Lauder Consultant and counter manager at Herberger’s where she spent years helping women feel good about their looks and themselves. She was an avid reader and loved to swim. Virginia was a member of the First United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday School, serving on various committees and circles, charter member of the G O of P.E.O., serving as past president, and American Legion Auxiliary and lifetime member of the PTA. She supported her husband as the first president of Nebraskaland Days, co-founder of the original Style Show and along with her husband, received the Dale Studley Award. Virginia touched many lives and will be missed by all who knew her. She also was a Camp Director of the Camp Kahabi Campfire Girls and served on the board. Her family includes her children; Eric (Sandra) Hornbacher of Winter Park, FL, Erin (Michael) Shultz of North Platte, Kelly (Kathleen) Hornbacher of Lakewood, OH, and Sarah Cooper of Colorado Springs, CO, grandchildren; Tyler (Karen) Carraway, Jennifer Carraway, Courtney (Brandon) Pfeifer, Matthew (Ashley) Shultz, Elyse (Scott) Dudgeon, Michael (Crystal) Cummings, Joey (Trisha) Cummings, and Amy (Steve) Jackson, thirteen great-grandchildren; and also survived by her lifelong friends from Campfire. They continued to meet and stay in touch, those still present are Nadine Heath and Gloria Adkins . She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and her brother, Albert Kelly Taylor. A celebration of Virginia’s life will be 11:00 am Wednesday, September 14, 2016 at the First United Methodist Church with the Reverend Dr. Douglas A. Delp officiating. A private family inurnment at Ft. McPherson National Cemetery will be held prior to services. Memorials are suggested to the First United Methodist Church and Great Plains Health Heart Institute.
