MPCC Rodeo dominates in Lincoln

The Mid-Plains Community College Rodeo Team scored two event wins and an all-around title during the 60th annual University of Nebraska–Lincoln Rodeo on Friday and Saturday in Lincoln.

Riley Weehler, of Maloy, Iowa, claimed the Men’s All-Around championship after winning the team roping with Chandler Comfort, of Elwood. Weehler also placed second in the tie down roping.

JT Bradley, of Brewster, won the steer wrestling for Mid-Plains and was sixth in the team roping alongside Mykelsi Schnose, of Oelrichs, S.D. Schnose ended up fifth in the breakaway roping.

The scores led to a second place finish for MPCC in the men’s team standings.

“I was really happy with the way things went,” said Garrett Nokes, MPCC Rodeo Team timed event coach. “Overall, the stock was phenomenal, and our team just took care of business and made smart runs. It was a really good rodeo for us.”

Weehler’s all-around win was sweetened by the fact that’s he’s had some rough luck this season.

“Riley just hasn’t won what he deserved to win,” Nokes said. “He struggled for a while with horsepower and in the fall wasn’t drawing the cattle that he needed. I’ve just been waiting for him to bust out and really start whippin’ them, and he did that in Lincoln.”

Comfort also hasn’t been able to reach his full potential this season, despite being the top team roping heeler in the region last year.

“I feel like Chandler and Riley are two of my strongest competitors, so for them to jump in there and win over the weekend is just awesome,” said Nokes. “I’m really glad for them, and even though they didn’t have the best fall, I think they could dominate the spring rodeos and still make it to the finals.”

Bradley has proven to be a triple threat. His best event is calf roping, but in the first two rodeos of the spring, he has won both steer wrestling and team roping.

“What a competitor,” Nokes said. “He works really hard, and it’s fun to have him on the team. Those competing against him better take note because every time he backs into the box they could be in trouble.”

The next stop for the MPCC Rodeo Team will be the Hastings College Rodeo in Hastings on Friday and Saturday.
