Mildred Garner

Mildred Garner, 97, of Wellfleet, Nebraska, passed away peacefully in
her sleep on Sunday, March 3, 2019, at the North Platte Care Center.

Mildred was born, May 29, 1921, to Charles and Addie Embrey at Arthur,
Nebraska. She grew up in the Arthur and Maywood area and graduated from
Maywood High School.

On November 30, 1943, Mildred married Robert ‘Bob’ Garner.  They made
their home in Wellfleet and together had three children, Jim, Barbara
and Shirley.  Mildred later became a loving grandmother to numerous
grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great great-grandchildren.

Those who knew her loved her for her spunky personality, jovial laugh
and selfless spirit.  She was an excellent seamstress, embroiderer,
upholsterer, baker and gardener, but her true love was serving others.
When she was younger, she sent baked goods and sandwiches to the Canteen
for soldiers who passed through North Platte on their way to war; she
later baked professional wedding cakes for couples all over the state,
designed and sewed gorgeous wedding gowns, mended clothes for neighbors,
grew vegetables to give away to local shelters, and volunteered for
numerous charities through her church and community. Her heart was
happiest when she was giving to others.

In her spare time Mildred embroidered and made heirloom quilts. Though
it was a hobby for her, she turned out nothing less than perfection. Her
quilts would bring home first-prize ribbons at the local and state fairs
while her embroidery was thought by all to be priceless pieces of art.

Mildred will always be remembered for her many talents, loving heart and
selfless soul.  Her children will remember her as a devoted wife and
mother while her grandchildren will remember her for her contagious
laugh and sassy self!

She is survived by her children, Jim (Yvonne) Garner, of Kearney,
Barbara (Jim) Keller, of North Platte and Shirley Woodruff, of
Brunswick, Georgia; all her many grandchildren; and other family members.

Mildred was preceded in death by her husband, Bob; parents, Charles and
Addie Embrey; six sisters; and two brothers.

Cremation was chosen.  Memorial Service will be at 10 a.m. on Monday,
March 11, 2019, at Odean Colonial Chapel at C & Sycamore with Pastor
Mark Baldwin officiating.  Inurnment will follow in the Wellfleet
Cemetery.  The memorial book may be signed online at odeanchapel.com or
