ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) – The NCAA has added additional sanctions to the penalties Central Florida self-imposed after major recruiting violations were uncovered in its basketball and football programs last year.
The NCAA imposed one-year postseason bans for both men’s basketball and football on Tuesday. Those penalties are in addition to a $50,000 fine, adding two years to UCF’s previously proposed three years’ probation, reduction of basketball scholarships, the vacating of basketball victories and tighter limits of football recruiting visiting days.
The punishments stem from a 2011 investigation that found the programs were involved with runners for sports agents and made cash payments to recruits.
Former athletics director Keith Tribble and assistant football coach David Kelly were cited for unethical conduct by the NCAA and resigned. Basketball coach Donnie Jones served a three-game suspension.
LOS ANGELES (AP) – Former Los Angeles Lakers forward Matt Barnes is out of jail after being arrested on suspicion of threatening a police officer who stopped him for a traffic warrant.
Manhattan Beach police Sgt. Paul Ford says Barnes was released around 11:30 p.m. Monday, three hours after his arrest.
Barnes was walking when he was arrested on a $26,000 misdemeanor warrant for driving on a suspended license.
Ford says Barnes also allegedly made a verbal threat to the officer. Total bail: $51,000.
Barnes later posted on Twitter that a small situation had turned into an “Urban Legend” and scoffed at what he calls “all you perfect people” judging him for missing a court date.
Barnes is a free agent. He was the Lakers’ top-scoring reserve last season, averaging 7.8 points per game.
NEW YORK (AP) – Yankees first baseman Mark Teixeira had a cortisone injection in his left wrist, a day after hurting it while trying to make a diving stop at first base.
The Yankees said an MRI on Tuesday at New York-Presbyterian Hospital showed no structural damage. Doctors diagnosed Teixeira with inflammation, and the team said Teixeira will be evaluated again on Friday.
Teixeira was lifted after the seventh inning of the Yankees’ 5-4 loss to Baltimore on Monday night, their eighth defeat in 11 games. He said he hurt the wrist in his third at-bat against Boston on Sunday. Still, he felt as if he could play before he tweaked the injury in the field.
