Husker Camp Update – Huskers Continue High-Intensity Camp

Lincoln – The Nebraska football team practiced for just over two hours Tuesday afternoon on the Ed and Joyanne Gass practice fields. Head Coach Bo Pelini talked to the media both about the high intensity of practice and when practices will start to get a little easier in advance of the season opener.

“Right now we are letting it go. We are kind of still in camp mode,” Pelini said. “Over the next couple days, we will start to taper it down, more toward Thursday, Friday and Saturday. But we’ll probably have another good go tomorrow, and then we’ll start to taper it down a little bit.”

Coach Pelini then explained how this year’s progress in fall camp compares to the progress of previous years at the same point in practice.

“We’re ahead in some areas, but obviously we have a lot of work to do in other areas. I don’t know in comparison [to last year]. Probably a little bit ahead of where we’ve been, especially offensively from where we were a year ago. And I think defensively, especially with the first group,” Pelini said.

Pelini then addressed how full squad has fared in their first two days. The full Husker roster reported Monday with the start of the fall semester at Nebraska after being capped at 105 since the start of fall drills.

“They haven’t gotten in there a lot,” Pelini said. “A lot of the guys that came in, obviously they don’t know the offense and the defense like these other guys, and we’re not going to slow down for them yet. They’ll get more involved once we get into scout work.”

However, Coach Pelini added that walk-on freshman fullback Andy Janovich has been impressive thus far in practice.

“Andy Janovich is a guy that’s fighting for the opportunity, at least on special teams,” Pelini said. “Maybe down the line at fullback. He’s done a good job. He’s not in the top two (at fullback), but he’s learning.”

The Huskers return to the practice field Wednesday afternoon as they continue to prepare for their season opener against Southern Miss on September 1.
