Dorothy “Dot” Steburg, formerly of North Platte, passed away at her home in Joshua Tree, Calif., on Sept. 18, 2012.
Dot was born Dorothy Helen Tighe on April 22, 1917. Her father, Mathew Charlton Tighe, died when she was an infant and her mother, Helen, later remarried William L. Wood.
Dot graduated from St. Pat’s High School and attended college in Louisville, Ky. She returned to North Platte where she was an active member of St. Pat’s Parish and raised her family with her husband Walter.
Dot moved to California in 1963 where she worked for the Orange County Sheriff’s Department until her retirement in 1979.
After retirement she moved to the California Dessert community of Joshua Tree where she stayed active as a teacher and counselor to young women through the Catholic Daughters of America.
Although in failing health in her final years, Dot remained cheerful and upbeat and was a pleasure to be around.
Dot is survived by her sister, Marion Wood, of Omaha; three sons, C. W. “Bill” Steburg, of Carson, Calif., Dan Steburg, of Omaha, and Art Steburg, of Lakewood, Calif.; nine grandchildren; and many great and great-great grandchildren.
She will be returned to her childhood home in North Platte where there will be a graveside service at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 29, at the North Platte Cemetery.
