Five Grass Fires Spark South Of North Platte

Five fires burned a total of twelve acres south of North Platte. Firefighters from the North Platte Fire Department responded around 3:30 pm to the area near mile marker 80 on the west side of highway 83. The farthest fire south of North Platte was near the south entrance to Lake Maloney

There is no determined cause of the fires though a hot wheel bearing is a probable cause.

According to Battalion Chief at North Platte Fire Department, Jason Trimble, two separate fires joined into one single blaze. The largest fire responders contained burned seven acres. Trimble says it took 45 minutes to contain the five fires.

North Platte fire responders put four grass rigs to use against the fires while receiving mutual aid from Hershey supplying a tanker and Wallace supplying two grass rigs.

No structures were threatened and no injuries or accidents occurred.
