Tuesday Sports Day – Red Sox Introduce New Manager

Farrell introduced as new Red Sox manager

BOSTON (AP) — The Boston Red Sox have introduced John Farrell as their new manager.

Farrell appeared Tuesday at a news conference with club officials two days after the team announced it had reached an agreement with the Toronto Blue Jays to allow him to leave with one year left on his three-year contract as manager. The Red Sox sent infielder Mike Aviles to Toronto and obtained reliever David Carpenter in the deal.

Farrell, Boston’s pitching coach from 2007-10 under Terry Francona, takes over for Bobby Valentine, who was fired after one of the worst seasons in team history. The Red Sox finished in last place in the AL East with a 69-93 record, their worst since 1965 and four games behind the Blue Jays.

Farrell is the 46th manager in franchise history, and was introduced by Red Sox general manager Ben Cherington.

Golson will start against eighth-ranked Oklahoma

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) — Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly says quarterback Everett Golson did well during a full workout and will start for the No. 5 Fighting Irish at No. 8 Oklahoma on Saturday.

Kelly said Tuesday that Golson is at 100 percent. Kelly benched Golson against Brigham Young last week as a precaution, saying he wanted to give him more time to recover from a concussion sustained in a helmet-to-helmet hit against Stanford.

Kelly says Golson is feeling confident heading into the game against the Sooners (5-1).

Golson has struggled at times for the Irish (7-0), but Kelly says he is making progress. Kelly says Golson had his best four plays against Stanford just before he was hurt.

Getting ready in the City by the Bay

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — The Giants and well-rested Tigers will work out today at AT&T Park ahead of tomorrow’s World Series opener.

San Francisco earned its berth in the Fall Classic with last night’s 9-0 shutout of the St. Louis Cardinals in the decisive seventh game of the National League Championship Series.

Detroit has been off since completing a four-game ALCS sweep of the New York Yankees on Thursday.

The home team plans to send left-hander Barry Zito to the mound to face Tigers ace Justin Verlander in Game 1 of the best-of-seven title showdown.

San Francisco has home-field advantage thanks to the NL’s victory in this summer’s All-Star game.
