At a press conference at 1 PM Friday, the Colorado Rockies will introduce Walt Weiss as the sixth manager in franchise history. Weiss has no professional managerial or coaching experience, but did serve as a special assistant to the GM in Colorado from 2002 to 2008. In a fourteen-year playing career, Weiss played shortstop for four different teams, including the Rockies from 1994 to 1997. He was the 1989 American League Rookie of the Year and won the World Series the same year with the Oakland A’s. He was a National League All-Star in 1998 with the Atlanta Braves. The Rockies announced their choice late Wednesday night, ending a month-long managerial search that began when Jim Tracy resigned. Weiss, who will manage on a one-year contract, inherits a Rockies team fresh off the worst season in franchise history.
