John W. Spelts, age 78 of North Platte, passed away November 11, 2012 at Cozad. He was born April 1, 1934 To John and Lucille (Gumm) Spelts. He attended Madrid High School and later served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. John was united in marriage to Verna Joy Fister on May 28, 1958 at Ogallala. They moved to North Platte in 1960, and was employed by the U.P.P.R as a fireman/oiler. He was a member of the V.F.W and past member of the Knights of Columbus. John enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, woodworking, and playing horseshoes. Survivors include his wife, Verna of North Platte, his son Randy (Harriet) Spelts of North Platte, his daughter, Julie (Kai) Nylander of Aliso Viejo, CA, brothers, Dan (Jean Ann) Spelts of Arlington, TX and Doug (Georgia) Spelts of Cambria, CA, grandchildren, Hilary, Michael, and Molly Spelts, and Ashley Nylander. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Mary Lou Otterstein and Lola Johnson. A memorial has been established in his memory. Memorial services will be 10:30 am, Monday, November 19, 2012 at Carpenter Memorial Chapel. Inurnment will be at Ft. McPherson National Cemetery with military honors graveside. Cremation was chosen.
