Nebraska’s 2013 football season opener against Southern Mississippi will be played at Memorial Stadium, after Southern Miss sold home field advantage back to Nebraska for $2.125 million. There had been previous rumors that the game, originally scheduled for Southern Miss’s home stadium in Hattiesburg, might move to the Superdome in New Orleans or Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City. But this deal was reached between the two schools so that Southern Miss can acquire the money they need to buy out the contract of their recently fired head coach, Ellis Johnson.
