A Minatare man has pleaded no contest to manslaughter in the traffic death of a 21-year-old Gering man.

Online court records show that that 21-year Drew Schmaltz pleaded no contest to the charge on Friday. In exchange, prosecutors dropped drunken driving and felony motor vehicle homicide charges.

Police say Schmaltz was driving a vehicle carrying five other men when it went off the road and rolled three times. Five of the six people in the vehicle were ejected, and Taylor Magdaleno died.

Court records say that at the time of the crash, Schmaltz had a blood alcohol level of .155 — nearly twice the legal driving limit.

Schmaltz faces up to 20 years in prison when he’s sentenced on Feb. 26.
