Mother Nature Reminds Us It’s Still Winter with Powerful Storm

icy-road-neIcy roads and blowing snow plagued most all of Central and Western Nebraska Saturday night into Sunday morning.

While the city of North Platte didn’t take a direct hit from the storm, it packed enough of a punch to force cancellations and postponements of many events and cause some troublesome driving conditions in the city and surrounding areas.

Our neighbors to the north and west received the most snowfall, with up to 10 inches falling in some areas.  Powerful wind gusts up to 57 mph created major drifting problems with some drifts measuring 2-feet to 5-feet deep.  The highest total snowfall was reported about 40 miles northwest of North Platte.

By Sunday evening, streets in North Platte were, for the most part clear with some icy patches.  The Nebraska Department of roads is still urging “extreme caution” on most highways in Northern and Western Nebraska as of late Sunday evening, reporting that blowing snow and  ice continued to be an issue across the State.

No precipitation is expected the rest of the week and high temperatures will be in the 30’s and 40’s.
