(AP) — Texas has executed its 500th inmate since the state resumed carrying out capital punishment in 1982.
Kimberly McCarthy received lethal injection Wednesday evening for the 1997 slaying of her 71-year-old neighbor near Dallas. She’s the first woman put to death in the U.S. in nearly three years.
McCarthy was condemned for the robbery, beating and fatal stabbing of her neighbor, retired college professor Dorothy Booth. It was one of three killings linked to the 52-year-old McCarthy.
McCarthy was the 13th woman executed in the United States and the fourth in Texas, since the Supreme Court in 1976 allowed executions to resume.
Booth was attacked at her home with a butcher knife and candelabra. Evidence showed McCarthy used the knife to sever Booth’s finger to steal her wedding ring.
