A North Platte man has been given 15 to 25 years in prison for sexually assaulting a 14-year-old girl who was being prostituted by her mother.

Court records indicate that 26-year-old Zachary Schmidt was sentenced on Friday in Buffalo County District Court. He’d pleaded no contest to the charge.

Prosecutors say Schmidt had sex with the girl in Kearney between Feb. 1 and March 31 last year. He’d been charged with the same offense in Franklin County, but that charge was dismissed as part of a plea bargain with Schmidt.

The girl’s mother has been sentenced in three counties for prostituting the teenager and her 7-year-old sister.

The mother is not being named to protect the identity of the children.
