Ron Shaner, 86, of North Platte, NE, passed away Monday, July 15, 2013, at Linden Court in North Platte.
He was born Ronald Eugene on October 10, 1926, at Maxwell, NE to Orville and Ida Vergene Deets Shaner. He grew up in North Platte and attended North Platte High School. Ron joined the U.S. Navy in November 1944 and served until May 1946. After his discharge he returned to North Platte and started Shaner and Schram Garage then Shaner Garage. He retired in 1982 but never stopped working.
On February 24, 1945, Ron married Betty Jean Larson at Atwood, KS and they made their home in North Platte where they raised their two children.
Ron was a member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church and a life member of P.R. Halligan Post #163 American Legion and the Moose Lodge. He enjoyed fishing, yard work, building birdhouses, hunting and “making prairie dogs fly.” Ron especially loved his grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Betty, of North Platte; his son, Steve (Deb) Shaner, of Manhattan, KS; a daughter, Ronda (Doug) Johnson, of Frisco, TX; three grandchildren, Alison (Rich) Wiegard, Ben (Kristie) Johnson and Dr. Adam Shaner; a great-grandson, Cash Johnson; his nephew, Mark Shaner; and other family.
Ron was preceded in death by his parents, Orville and Ida Vergene, and a brother, Gerald Shaner.
A graveside funeral service with military honors will be 11:30 a.m. Friday, July 19, 2013, in Fort McPherson National Cemetery with Mr. Lloyd Speicher officiating. Visitation will be 8:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at Odean Colonial Chapel At C & Sycamore. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Shriners Children’s Hospital Transportation Fund or the donor’s choice. Odean Colonial Chapel At C & Sycamore is in charge of arrangements.
