Judge Expected to Rule on Simants’ Release Thursday

erwin-simants(AP) — A judge is considering freeing a man whose attorneys acknowledge that he killed six members of a western Nebraska family.

Seventy-five-year-old Audrey Brown, of North Platte, said she’s driven to Lincoln every year since 1979 so various judges considering freedom for Erwin Simants will see her and be mindful of the victims she represents. Her parents were among the six.

The 67-year-old Simants has been in the state’s Lincoln psychiatric hospital since being found not guilty by reason of insanity for the 1975 slayings of six in the Kellie family of Sutherland.

Doctors now agree that Simants is no longer mentally ill. A judge is expected to rule Thursday on whether Simants will be released.
