Nebraska Lawmakers Discuss School Security Funding

ne-legislature-13LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A legislative committee is considering ways to pay for more and better security at public schools in Nebraska.

The Education Committee members heard testimony Wednesday from school officials and child advocates.

A major worry for some: Can school districts pay for security improvements without taking money away from education?

Some people who testified said state aid in some form was needed.

Joseph Wright is director of security for Lincoln Public Schools, and he testified that the issues schools face are nontraditional and will be difficult to solve with regular funding.

He says the building improvements and the costs of more security personnel are “well outside standard school budgets.”
