Nebraska officials say there were no boating-related deaths reported in the state in 2013, the first time that’s happened since tracking began in 1965.
The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission says the number of boating accidents also decreased to 31 last year. There were 44 in 2012.
Herb Angell, the state’s boating law administrator, says diligent law enforcement and expanded safety education were factors in the change.
There were eight boating-related fatalities in Nebraska in 2012. The state has averaged five a year since 1965.
