A Burwell man and his two-year-old daughter are dead in a suspected murder-suicide.
According to a news release from Garfield County Attorney, Dale Crandall, two bodies were recovered late Tuesday at the scene of a shooting in Burwell. The deceased were identified as 31-year-old Christopher Melling and his daughter, Aimee, who would have turned three later this month.
Crandall said concerned neighbors contacted police Tuesday afternoon to report that they had not seen any activity around the house recently.
Law enforcement responded to 624 East E. Street and broke out a window to gain access to the residence where they discovered the bodies. Officers recovered a single firearm at the scene.
The Nebraska State Patrol (NSP) confirmed that they are investigating the deaths as a murder-suicide.
The NSP, Burwell Police Department and the Garfield County Sheriff’s Office are conducting a joint investigation which is ongoing.
Autopsies on both bodies have been scheduled for later this week.
Burwell is about 90 miles north of Kearney.
