Scottsbluff– The coaches have been selected for the 2014 West Nebraska All-Star Football Game and West Nebraska All-Star Volleyball Game. It’s the 36th annual football game and the 30th annual volleyball game.
Derek Deaver from Scottsbluff High School will lead the West football team. Deaver, a long-time assistant coach at Scottsbluff, helped the Bearcats finish this past season with a 6-4 record, losing to York in the first round of the Class B playoffs. This is coach Deaver’s third time serving as a coach for the West team. He previously served as an assistant coach for the West team in 2006 and 1993.
The West assistant coaches are: Jerod Dean from Bridgeport High School, Todd Ekart from Sidney High School, and Jordan Haas from Hemingford High School.
Scott Johnesen from Medicine Valley High School will lead the East football team this year. This past season Johnesen’s team posted an 8-3 record defeating Elwood and Shelton in the first two rounds of the Class D-2 playoffs, before losing to Stuart in the quarterfinals. This will be coach Johnesen’s second time as a coach in the West Nebraska All-Star Game. He served as an assistant for the East team in 2005.
The East assistant coaches are: Brian Cargill from Cozad, Clint Hosiek from Medicine Valley, and John Sloup from Sutherland.
The West Nebraska All-Star Football Game will be played Saturday, June 14 at Bearcat Stadium in Scottsbluff with a game time of 7:00 pm MDT.
Renee Rediger from Hyannis High School has been selected as the head coach for the West volleyball team. This past season Hyannis finished with a record of 24-5, losing to Paxton in the finals of the D2-10 Sub-Districts. This is coach Rediger’s first appearance as a coach in the West Nebraska All-Star Game.
Michelle Stevens from Bridgeport High School has been chosen as the assistant coach for the West squad for this year’s game.
Leading the East volleyball team this year is Amy Beyer from Hershey High School. This past season Beyer led Hershey to a record of 21-6, losing to Gothenburg in the semi-finals of the C1-11 Sub-District. This is coach Beyer’s second appearance as a coach in the West Nebraska All-Star Volleyball Game. She served as the head coach for the East in 1998.
Katie Wenz from Arapahoe High School will serve as an assistant coach for the East squad.
The West Nebraska All-Star Volleyball Game will be played Saturday, June 14 in Scottsbluff at Cougar Palace on the campus of Western Nebraska Community College. First serve is scheduled for 2:00 pm MDT.
A portion of the proceeds from the West Nebraska All-Star Football and Volleyball Games benefit local charities, including the Scotts Bluff County Volunteer Center.
