Shirley Jean Shaner, 81, of Maxwell, NE, passed away Saturday, March 29, 2014, at her home south of Maxwell.
Shirley was born August 4, 1932, to Archie A. Coon and Lois E. Karr at Brady, NE. She grew up in the Maxwell and Brady area and graduated from Maxwell High School.
On June 2, 1950, Shirley married Kenneth Loree Shaner at North Platte, NE. She followed Ken’s service career living wherever he was stationed for the next 20 years. Shirley later worked as a medical transcriptionist for Dr. Cooper’s office in North Platte until hiring on to the U.S. Post Office October 12, 1970, retiring in 1991.
Shirley loved boating and gambling. She belonged to Job’s Daughters and was involved in several civic services during her postal career.
She is survived by her daughter, Kim (Jack) McKenna, of Brady, NE; two granddaughters, Loree Stripling, of Tumwater, WA and Crystal Bergeron Bauer, of Lincoln, NE; a step grandson, John McKenna, of Lexington, NE; a brother-in-law, Dale (Betty) Shaner, of North Platte, NE; four great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews as well as other family.
Shirley joins her beloved husband, Ken, in rest as she had done in life. He preceded her in death a day earlier. She was also preceded in death by her parents, Archie and Lois.
Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 2, 2014, at Odean Colonial Chapel at C & Sycamore with Rev. Dr. Douglas A. Delp of the First United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will follow at Fort McPherson National Cemetery. Visitation will be 8:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Odean Colonial Chapel at C & Sycamore. Condolences may also be shared at odeanchapel.com. Memorials are suggested to the Callahan Cancer Center, Great Plains Regional Medical Center ICU unit or Hilltop Estates in Gothenburg.
