Hastings Man Accused of Trying to Kill Officer

hastings-police-goodHASTINGS, Neb. (AP) — A 29-year-old Hastings man has been accused of trying to kill a police officer who was hanging out of a car the man was driving in an attempt to flee.

On Tuesday in Adams County Court in Hastings, Marty Deckert was charged with second-degree attempted murder and three related felonies. Deckert remained in custody on Wednesday, pending $750,000 bail. Online court records don’t list the name of his attorney in the case.

Authorities say a Hastings police sergeant tried to arrest Deckert on a misdemeanor warrant Friday. A court document says Sgt. Paul Weber leaped onto Deckert as Deckert started up his wife’s car and accelerated. Weber was dragged until the car ran into a utility pole.

Police say Deckert ran but was captured after breaking into a woman’s home.
