NORFOLK, Neb. (AP) — A student at a parochial school in northeast Nebraska has been diagnosed with tuberculosis, a contagious lung disease that’s relatively rare in the United States.
Parents of students at Norfolk’s Park Avenue Christian School were given information at a meeting Wednesday night. It was arranged by the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services after the student tested positive.
The school is affiliated with Community Bible Church. The Rev. Aaron Hess says other students exposed to the disease will be tested.
State health records say only 125 cases were recorded in Nebraska from 2009 through 2013. Federal records say that in 2013 only 9,600 new U.S. tuberculosis cases were reported.
