LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A new report says Nebraska law enforcement officers have misused stun guns in several recent incidents.

The ACLU of Nebraska report released Tuesday says there’s a lack of oversight and guidance for the weapons, which release 50,000 volts of electricity. Eleven police departments were investigated between January 2013 and May.

The report says an elderly, disabled man was stunned by Omaha police, and another man was shocked for “staring down” a Grand Island officer from a hospital bed. It also says the weapons were used on a Hastings man for spitting on officers, a young woman in Grand Island with a mental illness, and a 10-year-old in a Kearney public school.

ACLU of Nebraska Legal Director Amy Miller says departments can improve accountability by adopting federal recommendations for the weapons.
